Jaz Reynolds Suspended After Twitter Post

Reynolds suspended indefinitely after insensitive comment posted on Twitter: University of Oklahoma wide receiver Jaz Reynolds has been suspended indefinitely after comments he made on Twitter regarding the University of Texas gunman incident on Tuesday. Authorities said 19-year-old Colton Tooley, a sophomore math major at UT-Austin fired an AK-47 as he walked across campus before walking into the Perry-Castaneda Library and shooting himself to death. The University of Texas was on lockdown for several hours, and classes were canceled on Tuesday. (KOCO)

Sims Weighs In On National Anthem Controversy

Sooner great and former Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims weighed in on the controversy surrounding OU fans ending the national anthem with "Sooners", instead of "brave."

From The Oklahoman..
Sims said he doesn't mind OU fans yelling "Sooners" at the end of the national anthem. "To me, what's the big deal?" he said. "You know, 'home of the Sooners,' that's the state of Oklahoma. That's the way I look at it."

Sims said there will always be people who disagree with the fans' practice.

"It is what it is, so we'll see what happens (Saturday)," he said.

Brennan Clay Released From Hospital

Clay released from hospital: Per Oklahoma statement, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said today that Sooner running back Brennan Clay has been discharged from hospital care and is back in his campus residence. Clay was injured late in Saturday's game against FSU. "We were happy to see big smiles from Brennan this morning," Stoops said. "Everything has checked out well." Stoops said it has not yet been determined how long Clay will be sidelined.

UPDATE: Clay Carted Off Field In FSU Game

Freshman Brennan Clay injured in 4th quarter of FSU game: Oklahoma freshman running back Brennan Clay left Saturday's game against Florida State early in the fourth quarter. Clay was hurt early in the fourth while being tackled, taking a hard hit to the head. He laid on the turf immobile until medical staff was able to examine him. (KC Star)
UPDATE: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops says running back Brennan Clay was responsive and smiling when he was carted off of Owen Field following an injury in Saturday's 47-17 win against Florida State. Stoops says X-rays taken at the stadium were negative, but Clay was taken to the hospital because doctors "wanted to make sure they're not missing anything.'' Stoops says Clay "was moving everything, but they have to be sure.''(SI.com)

Oklahoma routs Florida State: Surrounded by family, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops reached out for a handshake and an embrace with his little brother, Mark. Perhaps if No. 10 Oklahoma's 47-17 win on Saturday had come against a team other than No. 17 Florida State — with Mark Stoops coaching the defense — it would have felt a lot more satisfying for the Sooners' coach. "It's a rotten place to be because I appreciate the way our team played and all that, but you just cannot separate blood," Bob Stoops said. "I just don't like it. I knew that coming into the game I didn't, and I'm positive of it now after the game." Landry Jones outplayed Christian Ponder by throwing for 380 yards and four touchdowns against Mark Stoops' defense, and the Sooners (2-0) moved past their shaky season opener in style. (AP)

Murray's rushing yards amended after error: A statistical error by the Oklahoma stats crew during last week's season-opening victory over Utah State credited too many rushing yards to Sooners running back DeMarco Murray. Murray was originally credited with 218 yards. His amended total is 208. The discrepancy happened in the fourth quarter of the Sooners' 31-24 win. On a second-and-7 play from the OU 49, Utah State committed a 5-yard substitution infraction. The penalty moved the ball ahead to the Utah State 46, but the stat crew inadvertently recorded the subsequent play from back at the OU 44. The next play--a 5-yard Murray gain--ended at the Utah State 41, and the stats initially reflected Murray with a 15-yard run instead of a 5-yard run. (More at Tulsa World)

Offensive Lineman Tavaris Jeffries Arrested

Jeffries suspended after arrest: Oklahoma offensive lineman Tavaris Montrel Jeffries was arrested last weekend on a complaint of domestic abuse, according to a Norman police report obtained Thursday. An OU spokesman said Thursday night that Jeffries’ status with the team is suspended. Jeffries, who turns 22 on Sept. 21, was formally charged on Thursday with misdemeanor domestic abuse assault and battery, according to online documents filed in Cleveland County District Court. Oklahoma Edges Utah State, 31-24

Oklahoma defeats Utah State, 31, 24: Given a few extra moments to think about it, Bob Stoops made a pivotal decision about how best to stave off a surprising charge from Utah State. Needing less than a yard to move the chains, he put the ball in DeMarco Murray's hands and went for it on a fourth down in his own territory. Murray needed to dive and stretch the ball out in front of him as he headed toward the sideline, picking up the most crucial of his career-best 218 yards rushing and sending No. 7 Oklahoma to a 31-24 victory against the Aggies on Saturday night. "I thought we could make a half a yard," Stoops said. "And I was almost wrong." Two plays later, Murray went zooming down the left sideline for a 63-yard touchdown run — his second of the night — to extent the Sooners' lead to 28-17 midway through the third quarter. That was just enough to hold off Utah State and Diondre Borel, who shredded Oklahoma's inexperienced secondary for 341 yards and two touchdowns. (AP)

Sam Bradford to Start Week One

Report: Rams to name Sam Bradford starting quarterback: Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that the Rams have settled on a starting quarterback for Week One of the 2010 season. And it isn't A.J. Feeley. Or Keith Null. Or Thaddeus Lewis. Per Glazer, No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford will be announced as the team's starter on Saturday. (ProFootballTalk.com)
UPDATE: It's Official; Bradford Era Begins: No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford will start at quarterback for the St. Louis Rams in the regular-season opener at home against the Arizona Cardinals next weekend. Coach Steve Spagnuolo announced the decision Saturday, saying Bradford had earned the job. "We're confident. The staff's confident. The team's confident," Spagnuolo said. "It's well deserved." “I know how important this is to you and the whole fan base, so let me…I’ve really got two things I want to hit you with. One is that the three quarterbacks that will be on our football team are (Sam) Bradford, A.J. Feeley, and Thad Lewis, so that you know that. I did talk to the quarterbacks this morning, and visited with the team. We will start Sam Bradford against Arizona this week. We’re confident, the staff’s confident, the team’s confident. It’s well-deserved. He deserves this opportunity. The other two moves were, we placed two guys on IR today: (S) Kevin Payne and (OT) Eric Young. So both of those guys went to the IR. I think I talked with you the other day, they had some injury situations. Now, I’m in the middle, to be honest with you, of doing the other things, getting the roster taken care of, so this will be pretty quick. But I did want to get that to you, and with that I’ll open it up.”

(On what proved Bradford was deserving of the starting quarterback job)
“Well, it was evident in these last three games. He had pretty good control of what we were doing. The team kind of rallies around him. And again, I think we’re very, very fortunate to have a guy like A.J. Feeley in this particular role as a backup quarterback who is what he is, which is a seasoned vet that knows the ins and outs and can kind of feed that to Sam as he goes along here.”

(On how much Bradford’s progression has come from Feeley’s influence)
“Oh, I think there’s a percentage there. It’s not only coaching through (Quarterbacks coach) Dick (Curl) and (Offensive Coordinator) Pat (Shurmur), and certainly Sam’s work himself. But it’s always nice to have a player, a guy that’s been through the same things, who goes out there, takes a snap just like he does, sees it through the helmet just like he does. That, I think is very beneficial.”

(On why he’s convinced Bradford is prepared for everything that will come his way as a starting NFL quarterback)
“Well, I don’t think that anybody in this situation, coming in as a rookie quarterback, is ready for everything. I’m sure that these defensive coordinators will fire things at him that we haven’t seen yet. I totally anticipate that. He anticipates it. But you just prep him with the basics. He’s got a good team around, this will still be about the team. The guys have been doing a good job all the way through. When we talk about Sam leading the team in these preseason games, there were ten other guys out there who really did a nice job, too.”

“Obviously, very positive, but very professional and businesslike, which is Sam, and that’s a really good quality.”
