Rowing: Second Varsity Eight Named Boat of the Week

The University of Oklahoma rowing team earned its second-straight conference honor as the second varsity eight boat was named the Conference USA Boat of the Week Tuesday after a perfect 4-0 weekend helped OU win the Longhorn Invitational March 22-24.

The Sooners’ second varsity eight went undefeated in Austin, Texas, and posted double-digit wins in all four races against conference rivals Texas, Tulsa and Kansas State as well as San Diego. Their average margin of victory was 16.85 seconds, and the smallest win at the three-day event for the OU boat was 14.6 seconds against San Diego.

OU’s fastest time came in the finals against rival Texas, where a 6:37.0 was 17.1 seconds ahead of the Longhorns and capped off the perfect weekend.

“It’s been really fun to watch this boat develop in the early season,” OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. “The 2V8 had an incredible weekend in Austin and I’m so proud of them for receiving this honor. Their collective effort on the water is something we’re seeking to find in every one of our lineups."

The boat was comprised of coxswain Jessica Hogan, Becca Winchester, Olivia Staff, Taylor Gillespie, Marilyn Kozlowski, Jenny O'Grady, Kelsey O'Grady, Heather Morris and Ashley LaFollette.

The second varsity eight helped Oklahoma win all 15 of its varsity races in Texas. For the first time in program history, the Sooners won every varsity race in a multi-day competition. The three-day regatta was capped by a four-race sweep of the Longhorns in the varsity events, a first for the OU program in its fifth season. This is the second C-USA honor for Oklahoma this season. The Sooners’ varsity four claimed this year’s first conference accolade last week.

The Sooners return to the water this weekend at the Pac 12 Challenge in Redwood City, Calif. OU will race Pac 12 powerhouses No. 2 California, No. 9 Stanford, and Oregon State on March 30-31.
