Coach Stoops Clarifies Statement on Paying Players

Saturday, during a press conference reviewing the Sooners' spring scrimmage, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was asked if he wanted to clarify whether everything he said was everything he meant.

"Yes and no," he said. "In the end, my opinion is valid. I wasn't asked specifically, 'Am I in favor of a stipend?' I've been officially on record that I am in favor of a stipend, as long as all athletes get it. Female and male. I'm all about Title IX. I think it's the right thing. I love our women's sports here at this university; (they) are fantastic. And that's what college is about, being well-rounded.

"So everyone needs to get one. If they're going to give a football player one, everyone needs to get one. I have been on record as saying, as far as a stipend goes, I am for that. Now, I was just asked about paying players to play football, and of course I went off on what they already are paid." (More at Tulsa World)
