Former Sooner Passes Away

Dick Heatly, who played football under coach Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma from 1949-51, died April 4 of complications from Alzheimer's disease in Spartanburg, S.C., He was 83.

Heatly was an honorable mention All-American as a halfback and punter who helped Oklahoma win 31 straight football games. He was on OU's first national title team in 1950.

Heatly was an all-state high school player in Mangum and walked on to the Oklahoma football team. He quickly earned a full scholarship and became the punter and starting halfback alongside Heisman Trophy winner Billy Vessels. (Tulsa World)
