Golf: Three Sooners Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

Three members of the 31st-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s golf team were among 27 student-athletes named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team, the league office announced Tuesday.

Senior Abraham Ancer (multidisciplinary studies), junior Michael Schoolcraft (economics) and sophomore Michael Gellerman (communication) earned first-team honors with a 3.20 or better GPA. Twenty student-athletes from the conference’s 10 universities received first-team honors, while seven claimed second-team spots.

“We are always excited when the guys get recognition in the classroom, and it is deserved,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Our guys work hard, and expectations are put on them. It is great to see hard work get rewarded.”

Ancer obtained the first-team honor for the second straight year, while the recognition was the first for both Schoolcraft and Gellerman.

To qualify for the Academic All-Big 12 Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulatively or over each of the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team includes those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
