Drew Allen was among the small group of young quarterbacks working out with Sonny Detmer, the father of NFL quarterbacks Ty and Koy Detmer, mastering the mechanics and nuances of the position for about two hours each night.
Koy and Ty would show up every now and then when they could during their offseason, helping their dad and allowing more 1-on-1 instruction.
These sessions are why Allen was able to land at a school like Oklahoma after high school and why Syracuse fans expect him to come in later this summer and contend for, if not outright win, the starting quarterback job before the Aug. 31 opener against Penn State.
"Sonny just kind of needed a project I think more than anything," said Andy Allen, Drew's father. "He and Sonny just hit it off from the get-go. When Drew was a little bitty thing, Sonny always said this kid is gonna amount to something."
Said Sonny: "You just get me Super Bowl tickets. That's all I need when he gets up (to the NFL) because I think he's a real pro prospect." (More at The Post-Standard)
