Sooners Committed to 4-Man Front

Oklahoma coaches were tinkering with the idea of switching to a 3-4 defense, but seem to have changed course with junior Chuka Ndulue's move from defensive end to tackle.

“We've been playing a lot of 4-3,” said sophomore defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. “We thought we were going to play 3-4, but we stayed with the 4-3. We moved Chuka down and now we're just in there banging.”

Asked why he thought the schematic switch was coming, Phillips said, “Because we didn't have any depth at the D-tackle position. They kind of told us that, but they just changed their mind I guess.”

Some of OU's 2013 defensive signees said around signing day that the change was imminent. Sophomore defensive end Michael Onuoha had told some of those close to him that he was moving to linebacker, a strong indicator that the 3-4 was coming.

First-year defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, who was hired in late February, said he was involved in the decision to move Ndulue inside. (The Oklahoman)
