Tia Brooks wrapped up a dominating OU career as she repeated as the shot put national champion Saturday at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Brooks, who also won both the indoor and outdoor titles last season and the indoor national title again this year, recorded a 62-0.5 on her final attempt of the competitions to win the event by nearly four feet. Her dominance in the shot put was apparent as her first attempt of the competition, 59-0.75, would have won by nearly six inches.
She posted a 57-4.25 in her fourth throw and a 59-7 in her fifth, the latter better than the second-place mark. That set the stage for her record-breaking throw in the final round. While she fell just short of the women's collegiate record, the Grand Rapid, Mich., native broke the meet record she set months earlier at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Brooks' win in the NCAA meet was her sixth consecutive of the outdoor season, all with throws of over 60 feet. She became the top-ranked shot putter in her first event of the outdoor season, the Sun Angel Classic, and was never challenged throughout the outdoor season. The title marked her 12th consecutive win of 2013, going back to her first indoor meet on Jan. 19. Of those, her winning throw was greater than 60 feet in 10 meets.
The sweep of both the indoor and outdoor titles marked the fifth consecutive year in which the same woman claimed both shot put titles in one year.
In the 1,500 meter run final, it was the tale of two races for seniors Patrick Casey and Riley Masters. Casey opened with the second fastest first 300 meters, then slipped back as Masters had the fastest second 400 meters and the one of the top two third laps to be in third heading into the final lap.
That's when Casey turned in one of the best laps of the race to move from seventh to third in the final standings with a 3:50.60. Masters dropped back behind the leaders in the final lap to end up 11th overall with a 3:55.12.
That finish gave Casey his best finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 1,500 and earned him first-team All-American honors. Masters earned second-team All-America honors, the first time in his collegiate career to earn All-America honors in an outdoor track competition.
Another senior, Kristen Rice, advanced to her first NCAA competition after qualifying in her fourth attempt at the West Regionals two weeks ago. The Flower Mound, Texas, high jumper made the most of her first trip to the NCAA Outdoor, setting a career best. Rice cleared 5-7.75 in her second attempt at that height, then cleared 5-9.75, a season best and career best, in her third attempt at that height. She finished her season when she missed three attempts at 5-10.75. Her final mark, 5-9.75, left her in 18th place in the competition.
With the 10 points from Brooks' victory and a seventh-place finish by Avione Allgood in the javelin on Wednesday, the OU women finished tied for 21st with 12 points. The OU men finished 38th with six points, all from Casey's third-place finish.
The Kansas women won the overall title with 60 points, ahead of Texas A&M's 44. Florida and Texas A&M tied for the men's title, each with 53 points.
For those who have qualified, the final meet of the 2013 season will be in two weeks, June 19-23 at the USA Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on the campus of Drake University.
