Oklahoma men's basketball program will welcome back former OU players and coaches for the third annual Sooner Basketball Family Weekend alumni event Friday-Saturday, Aug. 23-24, head coach Lon Kruger announced today.
Among the activities scheduled for the two-day reunion are a Tip In Club Golf Classic (Friday morning and afternoon tee times), a Friday evening Wayman Tisdale Scholarship Fund Dinner on the Lloyd Noble Center main floor honoring OU's All-Americans and 2,000-point scorers, and a Saturday Legends Alumni Game at noon. The public is invited to attend each of the three events. Fans will be admitted to the Legends Alumni Game free of charge (must enter via the east doors).
"This event has been tremendously successful and is one of the most fun things we get to do each year," said Kruger, who coached the Sooners to the NCAA Tournament last year in his second season in Norman. "Welcoming back all the players and coaches who helped lay the foundation for this tradition-heaped basketball program is truly exciting for us and we're happy to offer the opportunity for them to re-connect with each other, reminisce about their time as Sooners and share the weekend experience with our current team and our fans. This is a yearly highlight for everyone involved."
The Tip In Club Golf Classic will be held at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (rated the country's 14th-best campus course in 2011 by Golfweek) and costs $200 per individual (space is limited). Friday's dinner costs $50 per person. To register for either event, or to be a sponsor, call the OU Men's Basketball Office at (405) 325-4732.
Former OU players and coaches will be available for autographs on the court after the Legends Alumni Game. The Pride of Oklahoma marching band will perform and concession stands will be open. Fans in attendance will once again have the opportunity to be photographed with current and former OU basketball players for the annual team schedule poster.
Last year, a crowd of nearly 4,000 watched Jozsef Szendrei (2001-03) score 14 points and grab 24 rebounds to lead the Cream Team to a 74-60 win over the Crimson Team in the Legends Alumni Game.
"All of us had an incredible weekend and I know everyone who's coming to this year's event will have a blast," said Szendrei, who is now the OU men's and women's basketball teams' strength and conditioning coach. "It's so much fun getting to interact with each other and tell stories, and also to meet the fans. We really try to promote the fact that this is a family event and hope everyone can come out with their kids and just have a good time."
Featured honorees scheduled to be on hand this year are Alvan Adams, Harvey Grant, Blake Griffin, Darryl "Choo" Kennedy, Stacey King, Tim McCalister, Eduardo Najera, Hollis Price and Jeff Webster, as well as family members of the late Lester Lane and Wayman Tisdale.
Some of the many additional Sooners also scheduled to participate in this year's festivities include: Ernie Abercrombie, Steve Bajema, Chucky Barnett, Al Beal, Shawn Clark, Ted Evans, Garfield Heard, Del Heidebrecht, Skeeter Henry, Tim Heskett, David Little, Ted Owens, Bob Pritchard, Jason Skurcenski, Renzi Stone, William Tisdale, Billy Tubbs, Tommy Tubbs and Ray Whitley.
