Oklahoma Defense is Ready to Silence the Critics

Over the past nine months, record-setting offensive statistics and intense criticism have left Oklahoma defenders wounded.

These aren't injuries that prevent anyone from playing; on the contrary, playing is virtually the only way to cure a football player's hurt pride. The Sooner defense begins that healing process Saturday evening against Louisiana-Monroe on Owen Field in the 2013 season opener.

OU Fans Advised to Plan for Heavy Traffic

The University of Oklahoma football team is not the only group that needs a game plan Saturday. Fans traveling to Norman for the game need one, too.

Ongoing construction work on Interstate 35 may cause traffic delays, and new requirements on what spectators can and cannot carry into the stadium may cause frustration at the gate. Fans would do well to plan ahead, police and OU officials said.

Kickoff for the Sooners' season opener with the University of Louisiana-Monroe is 6 p.m. Saturday.

OU Reverses Stadium Policy, Plans Review

University of Oklahoma President David Boren announced Friday that the rules governing what the fans could bring into the stadium last year, which allowed purses of reasonable size and seat cushions, will continue to be allowed, subject to reasonable inspection at the gates.

The changes in the rules recently announced will not be in effect for Saturday’s game, while they undergo further review. The university does not want to unduly inconvenience fans, Boren said.

Adrian Peterson Visits Children's Hospital

Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota announced on Monday they are coming together with Vikings running back and reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson and The All Day Foundation to advocate for the health and well-being of kids throughout the state. The announcement coincides with The All Day Foundation and Children’s forthcoming fundraiser on Sept.10, “The Eat Big, Give Big Texas BBQ – An Evening with Adrian Peterson.”

To celebrate the news, Peterson visited with patients and families at Children’s Minneapolis campus on Monday.

Former Oklahoma Receiver Ryan Broyles is "mentally 100-percent"

Former Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles certainly hasn't been hesitant to get back on the field following an ACL injury suffered last December.

In fact, it's easy to forget he suffered that injury at all. His practice time has far exceeded his rest time throughout training camp and he played in his first live game this past week at Cleveland.

"Mentally, I'm 100-percent," he said following Sunday's practice, "so I want to go out there and make plays when I can."

Raiders Cut Linebacker Keenan Clayton

Oakland Raiders cut four-year NFL veteran Keenan Clayton this week. Clayton, a former Oklahoma linebacker, was drafted in the fourth round (121st overall) by Philadelphia Eagles in 2010 NFL Draft.

The Eagles signed Clayton to a four-year contract on June 10, 2010 and was released two years later on August 31, 2012.

Kaelan Washington Finishes 4th at Pan Am Games

Oklahoma track and field's Kaelan Washington leaped to a fourth-place finish in the long jump at the Pan American Junior Games in Medellin, Columbia, over the weekend.

Washington finished with a mark of 7.27 meters in his first international competition. Washington, who will begin his sophomore year this upcoming season, managed two legal jumps out of six, with the other going 7.26 meters.

Jay Norvell: Oklahoma Receiver Jaz Reynolds Has 'learned his lesson'

Senior receiver Jaz Reynolds is all set to return to game action this weekend against Louisiana-Monroe.

“Jaz is ready to go,” said OU co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell. “He’s excited. He’s worked hard. He’s learned his lesson. He’s made some mistakes, but he wants to do a good job.”

Sallie McLaurin a Senior CLASS Award Candidate

University of Oklahoma volleyball’s Sallie McLaurin has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. The award is given annually to student-athletes that excel both on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

In the classroom, McLaurin is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree and has been named to the OU Dean’s Honor Roll (3.50-3.99 GPA) four times and the OU President’s Honor Roll (4.00) once.

OU Promotions Unveiled For 2013 Football Season

The University of Oklahoma unveiled its promotions schedule for the 2013 football season. Thanks to tremendous fan feedback and participation, “Stripe the Stadium” returns for a second campaign and will highlight the festivities surrounding OU’s Big 12 Conference opener against West Virginia on Sept. 7.

The season kicks off on Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe, which will be “Band and Spirit Day.” The 2013 home opener is slated to feature a flyover of vintage World War II-era aircraft during the national anthem. OU’s national merit scholars will also be recognized at this contest.

Bob Stoops Announces Team Captains

Head coach Bob Stoops announced captains for this season, as voted on by the team.

Offense: OL Gabe Ikard & FB Trey Millard

Defense: CB Aaron Colvin & LB Corey Nelson

Special Teams: OL Austin Woods & K Michael Hunnicutt

There were certainly no surprises in that group, as both Ikard and Millard served in those roles a year ago, while fellow seniors Colvin and Nelson have also embraced even more of a leadership role in 2013. Without question, Woods earned the respect of his teammates a year ago while beating cancer, while Hunnicutt is the lone junior among the group.

DeMarco Murray Calls Benching 'Frustrating'

Former Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray is slated to be the Dallas Cowboys' featured running back this season. His ability to stay healthy and productive makes him the X-factor on a potentially special offense.

Which made it all the more eyebrow raising when Cowboys coach Jason Garrett benched Murray after the running back fumbled during Dallas' second possession Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Oklahoma Lineman Arrested After Breaking Into Ex-girlfriend's House

A University of Oklahoma football player accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's house with a crowbar and threatening to kill another man there was arrested Monday.

Jake Reed, an OU offensive lineman, was arrested and booked at Cleveland County jail Monday afternoon. Reed is charged in Cleveland County District Court with one count of first-degree burglary, one count of assault and battery and one count of domestic abuse.

NFL: Ronnell Lewis Cut By Detroit

The Lions parted ways with another disappointing middle-round draft pick today, waiving defensive end Ronnell Lewis after one unproductive season.

Lewis, a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma last year, was supposed to be a core special-teams player as a rookie. Instead, he was inactive for the final seven games of the season and played just one defensive snap in 2012.

Adrian Peterson on ACL Recovery: I Set the Standard High

Before Adrian Peterson, taking a year to come back from ACL surgery was OK. Needing an extra year to return to normal off an ACL injury was standard. Again, that was before Peterson.

Now people just figure Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will be back by the regular season. Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose becomes a punchline when he's not back on the basketball court in less than a year.

Kendric Maple Receives Sooner Oath Award

University of Oklahoma redshirt senior wrestler Kendric Maple added yet another honor to his collection as he was named the male recipient of the Sooner Oath Award on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The peer-awarded honor, developed in 2007, is presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Members from the council present nominees for the award, and then student-athletes vote for the recipients.

Former Sooner Tony Jefferson Hopes to Make Arizona Roster

It defies explanation that Oklahoma safety Tony Jefferson wasn't drafted.

But the bottom line is, the Big 12's second-leading tackler last season signed with Arizona. Jefferson faced long odds to make the roster but recorded two interceptions last week against Dallas, a performance that has him on the Cardinals' radar.

“I played fast, how I can play,” Jefferson said in a telephone interview with The Oklahoman. “It showed coaches they can trust me a little bit. I feel that game will help.”

Gymnastics: Sooners Named to World Championships

USA Gymnastics announced that former Oklahoma men's gymnasts Jake Dalton, Steven Legendre and Alex Naddour will represent the United States at the World Championships to be held Sep. 30-Oct. 6 in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Sooners are three of six gymnasts invited to the World Championships picked out of the 15 members of this year's Senior National Team announced Sunday. At least one OU gymnast has now been named to a World Championships or Olympics roster each of the last eight years.

Basketball: Cream Defeats Crimson in Alumni Game

The third annual OU men's basketball Legends Alumni Game featured a record amount of talent for the event. And it took an event scoring record from former Sooner guard Ebi Ere to lead the Cream team to a 102-99 win Saturday afternoon in front of an estimated crowd of 3,500 at Lloyd Noble Center.

Ere, who played on OU's 2002 Final Four and 2003 Elite Eight teams, scored 34 points with the help of 4-for-7 3-point shooting, and added four assists to earn MVP honors. He was followed on his team by Hollis Price's 15 points (13 in the second half) and Darryl "Choo" Kennedy's 13 (11 in the first half on 3-for-3 3-point shooting).

University of Oklahoma Changes Noteworthy Policies at Football Stadium

Fans attending University of Oklahoma Football home contests should begin planning now to ensure they are fully prepared for stadium policy changes that will impact them.

Soccer: Tennessee Defeats Oklahoma in Season Opener, 3-1

The Oklahoma soccer team fired 14 shots from six players, but it was not enough to topple Tennessee on Friday night in the Sooners' season opener. OU fell by a score of 1-3 to the Lady Vols in front of 1,524 fans at Regal Soccer Stadium.

"While defeat never sits well, we have a great deal to be proud of tonight," Head coach Matt Potter said. "We came to play and for large parts of the game showed great endeavor and creativity. The difference in the game was the quality in front of the goal and Tennessee showed what good teams do when they are given opportunities."

Trevor Knight Named Oklahoma Starting Quarterback

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops named redshirt freshman Trevor Knight his starting quarterback for the Sooners' 2013 season opener, scheduled for Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe on Owen Field.

Knight, a San Antonio native, beat out junior and once prohibitive favorite Blake Bell in Oklahoma's first quarterback battle since 2007, when future Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford won the job.

Kenny Stills Trying to Improve Performance After NFL Debut

Former Oklahoma receiver and Saints rookie Kenny Stills Jr. has already earned enough respect from Sean Payton to see some first-team snaps, and enough trust from Drew Brees to see some deep passes come his way.

If he can earn a few compliments from his father, a former NFL safety, then he'll know he's really getting somewhere.

Bob Stoops Hopes to Name Starting Quarterback Next Week

Oklahoma’s search for a starting quarterback appears to be reaching its conclusion–not that there’s much time left to decide.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops, in an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Friday, said that he hoped to name a starting quarterback by the end of next week.

Adrian Peterson Thinks College Players Should Be Paid

Adrian Peterson believes Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and other college football players should be able to get paid.

As the NCAA continues to investigate if Manziel got paid to sign autographs and memorabilia for dealers, Peterson spoke out about the situation and if he believes amateur athletes should be allowed to profit off their own names.

Adrian Peterson Views PED Accusations as a 'Compliment'

Adrian Peterson says he doesn't know which players use human growth hormone, nor does he want to know. But the NFL's reigning MVP is "sure" it happens and looks forward to testing that proves he's clean.

"People are trying to get the edge," Peterson told USA TODAY Sports recently at the Minnesota Vikings' training camp.
