Oklahoma Quarterback Cody Thomas to Play Baseball

Redshirt freshman Cody Thomas could be Oklahoma's backup quarterback next season. It's conceivable, depending on what the Sooners do with Blake Bell, or what Bell decides to do with his future.

It also depends on Thomas' progress between now and next September. This spring will be huge for him. And that makes his ambition to play both football and baseball for OU so intriguing.

"Cody's got to play some catch-up. But he's an awesome kid, and he has a chance to be really, really good," first-year OU coach Pete Hughes said. "His skill set is very good. He's big. He has a chance to hit for a lot of power. But it's going to be developed through a lot of reps. And that's our challenge right now, getting him a lot of reps."

Bob Stoops could be saying the exact same thing when the Sooners report to spring drills in several weeks. Thomas will be among them.

"That'll be the time where he misses some baseball games for us. But he can do it. He'll be able to double up," Hughes said. "We'll be smart. I did it. I went through it as a player. I've been around it enough coaching wise where we'll protect the kid and make sure he's developing as a quarterback." (More at Tulsa World)
