Oklahoma women's gymnastics team, the Sooners capped their efforts by sweeping the Big 12 weekly honor listing for Feb. 18.
Sophomore Haley Scaman was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the second-straight week to lead the award listing. Senior Madison Mooring was named Event Specialist of the Week for the first time this year, and freshman Chayse Capps picked up her fourth Newcomer of the Week award.
Gymnast of the Week Scaman had an incredible night at the Metroplex Challenge, culminating in a perfect 10.0 on floor exercise in the final routine of the night. Scaman tied her career-high on vault with a 9.95, her sixth 9.9+ vault this season. She followed up with a 9.9 on bars as she aided OU to a 49.575 on the event, tying the Oklahoma program-record score on the event. Scaman took to floor in the Sooners’ anchor position and posted a flawless performance, earning her a career-high 10.0 and a tie for the floor title. The score marked Oklahoma’s first perfect 10 since 2010 and only the second perfect 10.0 on floor in program history.
The Event Specialist of the Week, Mooring’s ultimate contribution to OU’s efforts this weekend could be summed up with the word “momentum.” Mooring was steady in all the right places, posting two 9.9+ routines on vault and beam for the Sooners and tying her season-highs on both events. Her 9.9 leadoff routine on vault set the tone for Oklahoma’s entire meet as she aided OU to a 49.475 on the event, its sixth performance of 49.400 or higher this year. She followed that effort by tying her season-high of 9.925 on beam in the No. 2 position, giving Oklahoma a crucial boost on a key mental event. Her score helped give OU a meet-high 49.500 on beam, the event that would prove to be a huge component in the Sooners’ victory.
Capps' ability to deliver in big situations shone again for the Sooners last weekend. Capps performed like a veteran on all three events, including an exceptional career-best 9.975 on beam to take the event title and lead Oklahoma. She also contributed a 9.85 on vault and a big 9.875 on floor, boosting the Sooners to a season-best 49.625 on the event. She has been named Newcomer of the Week four times this season, including two in a row over the last two weeks.
OU is set to face No. 5 Alabama, No. 7 Michigan and West Virginia in the annual Perfect 10 Challenge this week in Oklahoma City. The meet is slated for a 6:45 p.m. start on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Cox Convention Center and Arena. To purchase tickets, CLICK HERE or visit the link at the top of the page.
