Baseball: Cowboys Down Sooners, 3-1

The No. 29 University of Oklahoma baseball team lost to No. 20 Oklahoma State, 3-1, in front of a crowd of 1,941 at L. Dale Mitchell Park, Tuesday night in a non-conference contest. The Sooners dropped to 20-10 overall, while the Cowboys improved to 20-9.

“We haven’t scored a lot of runs the last seven or ten days,” reflected head coach Pete Hughes. “It’s like the other way around. When you’re hot, it’s contagious and when you’re not… guys tend to get out of their approach. When you get out of your approach, offensively… we got three hits tonight. I’m not taking any credit away from [OSU’s] pitching staff. I thought they pitched us very well.”

OSU scored two runs in the top of the second inning on solo home runs by catcher Gage Green and second baseman Tim Arakawa.

OU answered with a run in the bottom of the third as sophomore center fielder Craig Aikin (Coppell, Texas) raced home on a passed ball. Aikin walked and went to third on a base hit by sophomore right fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) to set up the scoring opportunity.

The Cowboys added an insurance run in the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded, Arakawa grounded a ball to second and beat the throw at first to avoid a double play and drive in his second run of the night. (More at
