Golf: Four Sooners Named Academic All-Big 12

Four members of the 16th-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s golf team were among 30 student-athletes named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team, the league office announced Wednesday.

Junior Michael Gellerman (communication), junior Charlie Saxon (communication) and sophomore Beau Titsworth (finance) earned first-team honors with a 3.20 or better GPA, while senior Michael Schoolcraft (economics) received second-team recognition with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. A total of 23 student-athletes from the conference’s 10 universities made the first team, while seven claimed second-team spots.

The first-team honor is the second in a row for Gellerman, and Schoolcraft’s second-team recognition comes a year after making the first team. The award was the first for both Saxon and Titsworth.

"We are always excited when our guys get recognized in the classroom," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "A Division I golfer misses a lot of class, so it shows how hard our guys have to work in order to receive good grades."

To qualify for the Academic All-Big 12 Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulatively or over each of the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team includes those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

The Sooners return to the course April 25-27 as they travel to the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Championship.
