Softball: Jessica Vest Highlights Sooners’ Academic Awards

Oklahoma softball junior Jessica Vest was named Academic All-District and was joined by five of her teammates as Academic All-Big 12 honorees, it was announced Thursday.

Vest was selected to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Team for District 7 for the second consecutive season after also taking home honors in 2013. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Vest, a multidisciplinary studies major, was also named to the named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the second year in a row. Last year she made the squad with a 4.00 grade point average.

Joining Vest on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team were senior Javen Henson (health and exercise science), juniors Callie Parsons (health and exercise science) and Shelby Pendley (multidisciplinary studies) and sophomore Kady Self (health and exercise science).

Henson was recognized for the third time in her career, while Parsons picked up her second and Pendley and Self earned the first of their respective careers.

In addition, junior Georgia Casey (human resources management) was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Oklahoma has had at least five of its student-athletes recognized for their academic prowess by the Big 12 in each of the past three seasons and at least two honorees since the Big 12 was founded in 1996.

The No. 13/10 Sooners close out the regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Oklahoma State. Saturday’s game will be played in Stillwater at 1 p.m., while Sunday’s finale will take place in Norman at 2 p.m.
