OU Soccer Schedule Promises to Excite

University of Oklahoma soccer coach Matt Potter and Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Castiglione released Oklahoma’s 2014 soccer schedule this week. The schedule is a challenging lineup that includes many of the nation's top teams.

OU’s slate will take the Sooners on the road and bring them home in near-equal amounts, with the squad hosting 10 matches at John Crain Field and participating in nine total away contests. The team will open the fall with four consecutive home events and five in total over the course of three weeks.

Oklahoma is set to face seven returning NCAA tournament teams, including 2013 defending NCAA runner-up Florida State. OU will also take on tournament contenders Oklahoma State, Utah, Florida, Nebraska, Texas Tech and West Virginia throughout the fall.

Of the seven tournament teams the Sooners will challenge this year, four finished 2013 ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division I poll: Florida State (No. 2), Florida (No. 10), West Virginia (No. 12) and Texas Tech (No. 17).

Over the course of the fall, OU will participate in 11 total evening contests at home and away.

The Sooners will open in August with a challenging total of five consecutive contests against 2013 NCAA teams. Oklahoma will kick off the fall on Friday, Aug. 22 with season-opening Bedlam showdown against in-state rival Oklahoma State. The team will then close the weekend on Aug. 24 against the Utah Utes at the OU Soccer Complex.

The Sooners will follow up by hosting Florida and Florida State in back-to-back matches on Aug. 29 and Aug. 31, respectively. OU will welcome the Gators and the Seminoles after traveling to the Sunshine State to face both teams last season.

OU will split the first weekend in September, facing Nebraska on the road on the 5th before returning home for Central Arkansas on the 7th. The Sooners are set to spend much of September on the road, with four straight away matches against North Texas, Tulsa, UC-Irvine and San Diego. Potter’s squad will close the month and its non-conference schedule with a match against in-state foe Oral Roberts on Sept. 26.

October will be packed with conference action for the Sooners as OU tackles seven Big 12 opponents over the course of five weeks. Oklahoma will open Big 12 action on Oct. 3 at Texas Tech before hitting the road for Ames, Iowa and Iowa State on Oct. 5. The team will follow up with home contests against Baylor (Oct. 10) and TCU (Oct. 12) before a Bedlam rematch with Oklahoma State on Oct. 17.

OU will host Texas on Oct. 24 and journey to West Virginia on Oct. 26 before closing its regular season slate against Kansas at home on Oct. 31. The Sooners will cap the season aiming for their fourth Big 12 Tournament appearance in the last five seasons.

The 2014 season will conclude at the NCAA Women's College Cup on Dec. 5 and 7 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Matt Potter enters his third season at the helm of the Oklahoma program this fall. He will lead a team onto the field that features 10 true freshman signees alongside 18 student-athletes who saw playing time in 2013, including eight who started 10 or more contests.
