Former Sooner Blake Griffin Voted to West Starting Lineup For 2014 NBA All-Star Game

The NBA announced that former Sooner Blake Griffin has been voted by the fans into the starting lineup for the Western Conference for the 2014 NBA All-Star Game. It is the third year for Griffin to make the starting lineup and the first time in three years the Clippers did not have both Chris Paul and Griffin in the starting lineup.

Kendal Thompson Would Be Ineligible to Transfer to OBU

Some theorized that Kendal Thompson might decide, in leaving OU, to drop down in status for his next go-round of college football. Thompson’s Southmoore High School coach, Chris Jensen, now coaches Oklahoma Baptist University, where Thompson’s former OU and Southmoore teammate, Nyko Symonds, is a star receiver.

Is OU Football Expanding Weight Room?

Jonathan Alvarez (a 2014 OU offensive lineman commit) told me that when he was on his visit this past weekend, Coach Schmidt told the recruits that Oklahoma is going to be doing a facility upgrade. He said they, in addition to some other facility upgrades, are going to be adding a new 20,000 square ft. weight room!

OU Volleyball Welcomes Three Newcomers

University of Oklahoma volleyball coach Santiago Restrepo has announced the signing of Marion Hazelwood and Harley Kelly to National Letters of Intent. Joining the incoming freshmen is Kimmy Gardiner, a transfer from Mississippi State.

Softball: Sooners Ranked No. 2 in Preseason Poll

The defending national champion Oklahoma softball team has been ranked second in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Top 25, it was announced Tuesday.

The Sooners received a nation’s best 17 first-place votes in the poll, but trail No. 1 Tennessee by nine points in the rankings, 729-720. The Lady Volunteers, whom Oklahoma swept in the Women’s College World Series Championship Series a year ago, earned seven first-place votes. Also receiving first-place votes were No. 3 Washington (1), No. 4 Florida (6) and No. 5 Michigan (1).

The No. 2 ranking garnered by OU is tied for the best preseason mark in school history. The Sooners were also ranked second to start 2001 after winning the program’s first national title in 2000, as well as opening up at No. 2 a year ago.

Adrian Peterson May Undergo Surgery

Former Oklahoma and current Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is scheduled to visit Philadelphia-based specialist Dr. William Meyers next week to evaluate his troublesome groin and decide if surgery is needed, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday.

Gabe Ikard Joins Colvin, Saunders in Senior Bowl

The Reese’s Senior Bowl announced Thursday that center Gabe Ikard has been added to its South roster. Ikard will join fellow Sooners Aaron Colvin and Jalen Saunders who had already accepted invitations to the annual all-star game in Mobile, Ala. The contest will be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium at 3 p.m. on January 25 and will be broadcast by NFL Network.

OU Women's Gymnastics Sweeps Conference Awards to Open 2014

After a dominant performance to open the season, it was only fitting that the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team would execute a sweep of the Big 12 weekly honor listing to kick off 2014. The Sooners' gymnasts did just that.

Junior Erica Brewer took home the season's first conference Gymnast of the Week award, while junior Rebecca Clark was named Event Specialist of the Week and freshman Chayse Capps captured Newcomer of the Week accolades, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Four Early Enrollees to Participate in Spring Practices

Four new members of the Oklahoma football team arrived on campus this week and will participate in spring football practices.

Freshmen Justice Hansen (quarterback) and Dimitri Flowers (athlete) started college classes Monday and were joined by junior-college transfers Isaac Ijalana (tight end) and Devante Bond (linebacker) as the Sooners’ 2014 early enrollees.

OU Gymnastics Ranked No. 1

The Oklahoma gymnastics team is the No. 1 team in the country following a big season-opening win at home against the Georgia Gym Dogs last weekend. The Sooners posted a 197.700 at the Lloyd Noble Center to kick off their 2014 campaign; that score stood as the nation's best effort throughout the weekend.

The Sooners were followed in the rankings by three future opponents this season, including Feb. 9 home opponent LSU at No. 2 (197.200). Perfect 10 Challenger competitor Alabama took the No. 3 spot (197.150), and Jan. 31 road foe Florida came in at a tie for No. 4 (196.650).

Running Back Keith Ford Gives Back to Hometown

Classes resume for the spring semester at the University of Oklahoma Monday, but on Friday OU freshman running back Keith Ford actually went back to school before returning to Norman.

A graduate of Cypress Ranch High School in Cypress, Texas, the Sooners’ emerging rushing threat took time to visit with students in his hometown before concluding his brief winter break following Oklahoma’s 45-31 win in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

OU Men's Basketball Ranked For First Time Since 2009

The Oklahoma men's basketball team is No. 25 in this week's AP Top 25 Poll, marking the first time since Nov. 23, 2009, that the Sooners are ranked in one of the two major polls.

With 103 points, the Sooners are tied with UCLA for the 25th spot. They are one of five Big 12 schools in this week's poll, more than any other conference.

Joe Mixon Doing His Own Recruiting for Oklahoma

Joe Mixon, ranked by Rivals as the No. 1 all-purpose back in the 2014 recruiting class, committed to the Sooners last weekend and immediately began talking up his future home to other recruits.

“That dude hits me up at least twice a week,” three-star defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao said with a laugh.

Women's Gymnastics: OU Defeats No. 8 Georgia

The No. 3 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team posted its highest season-opening score in program history Friday night, earning a 197.700-196.500 victory over the No. 8 Georgia Gym Dogs in Norman. An energetic crowd of 2,007 fans cheered the Sooners on to victory at the Lloyd Noble Center.

"I was very excited about the energy in building," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "The crowd was amazing and we were really fortunate to have all those people come out so we hope everyone comes out again next week and continue to follow our team. It was incredible out there.”

Former Texas Tech Quarterback Baker Mayfield Intends to Play at OU

Baker Mayfield decided to transfer from Texas Tech despite winning the starting quarterback job in the preseason as a walk-on true freshman.

Mayfield, who also started Texas Tech’s regular-season finale against Texas, had initially vaguely cited a “miscommunication” with coach Kliff Kingsbury as the reason.

Former Oklahoma QB Garrick McGee to Become Louisville Coordinator

ESPN.com's Joe Schad is reporting that current Alabama-Birmingham head coach and former OU quarterback Garrick McGee will join Petrino's staff as offensive coordinator. McGee had roles as Petrino's quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator during a stint at Arkansas from 2008-2011 before landing the job at UAB. During his time at Arkansas, McGee coached some of the top offenses in the SEC and was a 2011 Broyles Award finalist (nation's top assistant coach).

Ikard and McLaurin Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

The Big 12 Conference announced its Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients for the 2013 fall season and Oklahoma’s Gabe Ikard and Sallie McLaurin claimed the honor for their respective sports. The two Sooner student-athletes were selected as the award-winners for their sports based on a vote of each sport’s head coaching group.

Sooners Pick Up Commitment From 3-Star Lineman

Phoenix Mountain Pointe senior offensive guard Natrell Curtis, who recently decommitted from Washington, said Tuesday that he has committed to play football at Oklahoma.

Part of the reason for the decommitment, Curtis said, was the coaching change that occurred after he had committed to Washington.

MBB: Sooners Top Longhorns in Big 12 Opener

Buddy Hield scored 22 points and hit 4 of Oklahoma's 13 3-pointers, tying a season-high in an 88-85 win over Texas on Saturday.

After knocking down 10 of 16 3-pointers in the first half, the Sooners (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) cooled off after halftime. They were still able to win their Big 12 opener despite the Longhorns (11-3, 0-1) starting the second half on a 10-2 run and losing Isaiah Cousins after he was ejected for committing his second technical foul with 2:20 remaining.

Former Offensive Coordinator Mark Mangino Joins Iowa State

Mangino, who spent the past season as an assistant at Youngstown State, will become the offensive coordinator at Iowa State, he confirmed to The Star in a text message on Monday afternoon.

Bob Stoops Takes a Few More Shots at SEC

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops appeared on Colin Cowherd’s show on ESPN Radio on Friday and couldn’t resist taking a few more shots at the SEC.

“When I made the comment, the bottom half of the SEC was like 0-36 against the top half of the SEC. You realize that? A year ago … nobody talks about that. My point was, don’t say SEC like they’re all doing that (beating everyone). One or two or three top teams … sure, you give them the credit. Alabama … I’ve got the utmost respect for them. Are you kidding me? How could you not? But in the end, don’t talk about the entire conference that way. It’s just not true.

“Hey, I’ve got total respect for Alabama, but you can’t deny what we did last night. Obviously, we can play with anybody, whether it’s the SEC or anyone else.
