Softball: Sooners Ranked No. 2 in Preseason Poll

The defending national champion Oklahoma softball team has been ranked second in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Top 25, it was announced Tuesday.

The Sooners received a nation’s best 17 first-place votes in the poll, but trail No. 1 Tennessee by nine points in the rankings, 729-720. The Lady Volunteers, whom Oklahoma swept in the Women’s College World Series Championship Series a year ago, earned seven first-place votes. Also receiving first-place votes were No. 3 Washington (1), No. 4 Florida (6) and No. 5 Michigan (1).

The No. 2 ranking garnered by OU is tied for the best preseason mark in school history. The Sooners were also ranked second to start 2001 after winning the program’s first national title in 2000, as well as opening up at No. 2 a year ago.

OU Gymnastics Ranked No. 1

The Oklahoma gymnastics team is the No. 1 team in the country following a big season-opening win at home against the Georgia Gym Dogs last weekend. The Sooners posted a 197.700 at the Lloyd Noble Center to kick off their 2014 campaign; that score stood as the nation's best effort throughout the weekend.

The Sooners were followed in the rankings by three future opponents this season, including Feb. 9 home opponent LSU at No. 2 (197.200). Perfect 10 Challenger competitor Alabama took the No. 3 spot (197.150), and Jan. 31 road foe Florida came in at a tie for No. 4 (196.650).

Running Back Keith Ford Gives Back to Hometown

Joe Mixon, ranked by Rivals as the No. 1 all-purpose back in the 2014 recruiting class, committed to the Sooners last weekend and immediately began talking up his future home to other recruits.

“That dude hits me up at least twice a week,” three-star defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao said with a laugh.

Women's Gymnastics: OU Defeats No. 8 Georgia

The No. 3 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team posted its highest season-opening score in program history Friday night, earning a 197.700-196.500 victory over the No. 8 Georgia Gym Dogs in Norman. An energetic crowd of 2,007 fans cheered the Sooners on to victory at the Lloyd Noble Center.

"I was very excited about the energy in building," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "The crowd was amazing and we were really fortunate to have all those people come out so we hope everyone comes out again next week and continue to follow our team. It was incredible out there.”

Former Texas Tech Quarterback Baker Mayfield Intends to Play at OU

Baker Mayfield decided to transfer from Texas Tech despite winning the starting quarterback job in the preseason as a walk-on true freshman.

Mayfield, who also started Texas Tech’s regular-season finale against Texas, had initially vaguely cited a “miscommunication” with coach Kliff Kingsbury as the reason.

Former Oklahoma QB Garrick McGee to Become Louisville Coordinator's Joe Schad is reporting that current Alabama-Birmingham head coach and former OU quarterback Garrick McGee will join Petrino's staff as offensive coordinator. McGee had roles as Petrino's quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator during a stint at Arkansas from 2008-2011 before landing the job at UAB. During his time at Arkansas, McGee coached some of the top offenses in the SEC and was a 2011 Broyles Award finalist (nation's top assistant coach).

Ikard and McLaurin Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

The Big 12 Conference announced its Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients for the 2013 fall season and Oklahoma’s Gabe Ikard and Sallie McLaurin claimed the honor for their respective sports. The two Sooner student-athletes were selected as the award-winners for their sports based on a vote of each sport’s head coaching group.

Buddy Hield scored 22 points and hit 4 of Oklahoma's 13 3-pointers, tying a season-high in an 88-85 win over Texas on Saturday.
