Former Oklahoma Running Back Jakie Sandefer Dead at 78

Former Oklahoma running back and successful Texas oilman Jakie Sandefer passed away Tuesday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He was 78.

Sandefer, a native of Breckenridge, Texas, arrived at OU in 1955 and was a halfback on some of legendary coach Bud Wilkinson’s most dominant teams from 1956-58. He played with eventual College Football Hall of Fame inductees Tommy McDonald, Jerry Tubbs and Clendon Thomas.

“He was a great guy. He was an encourager,” former teammate and OU assistant coach and associate athletic director Leon Cross said. “He was a guy that really cared about everybody.”

Sandefer was also the roommate of former OU All-American running back Prentice Gautt, who was the program’s first African-American player. (Norman Transcript)
