Softball: OU Tops Big 12 Coaches’ Preseason Poll

For the third season in a row, and the sixth time in the last seven years, the Oklahoma softball team has topped the Big 12 Coaches’ Preseason Poll. The Sooners, who were ranked fourth in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll Tuesday, received six of the seven first-place votes. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.

The three-time defending Big 12 champions return five of the six Sooners that earned All-Big 12 honors last season. The team went 16-2 in the Big 12 in 2014 to capture the seventh regular season conference crown in program history and become the first team in league annals to win it three seasons in a row.

Overall, Oklahoma posted a 51-13 record last season and reached the Women’s College World Series for the fourth season in a row, the longest active streak in the country.

The Sooners led their fellow Big 12 teams with 36 points, while Baylor received the seventh first-place vote and ranked second with 30 points. Texas was slotted third by the coaches with 27 points, followed by Oklahoma State (19), Kansas (17) and a tie between Texas Tech and Iowa State with nine points each.

The 2015 season starts for Oklahoma on Thursday, Feb. 5 against No. 25 DePaul at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Sooners are also scheduled to face St. Mary’s and Hawaii at the tournament.
