“We want to definitely improve on what we did last year at the NCAA tournament,” OU Head Coach Mark Cody said. “We’re trying to build this, and we’ve got a whole new philosophy. Our philosophy is to build it slow, build it strong, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re asking a lot out of these guys. We’re holding very high standards for them, and I think that we can really improve on what we did last year.”
The first match of the evening pitted sophomore Ryan Millhof against freshman Christian Moody. Millhof, who collected two takedowns, an escape and the riding time point in the bout, defeated Moody in a 6-2 decision.
In the first 133-pound match, freshman Dylan Lucas recorded two takedowns and an escape before defeating junior Sean Williams by fall in 3:58.
Redshirt senior and 2015 national champion Cody Brewer recorded a 22-5 technical fall over freshman Aaron O’Brien in the second 133-pound match of the night. Brewer tallied seven takedowns, an escape, a 2-point nearfall and a 4-point nearfall and secured the riding time point en route to his win.
Sophomore Trae Blackwell picked up an 8-2 decision over redshirt freshman Noah Teaney at 141 pounds. After a 2-1 first frame in his favor, Blackwell collected a reversal, a nearfall and a takedown over the next two periods.
The 149-pound contest was a battle of the freshmen as Davion Jeffries tallied a 17-7 major decision over Jake Thornton. Jeffries was all about offense, tallying seven takedowns in the bout.
Redshirt freshman Brock Wingbermuehle recorded a win by fall (2:51) over redshirt sophomore Shayne Tucker at 157 pounds. Before the pin, Wingbermuehle had an 8-1 advantage.
At 165 pounds, 2015 NCAA qualifier Clark Glass took the win over freshman Hayden Hansen. All of Glass’s points came in the first and second frames before securing the riding time point for an 8-2 win.
Redshirt junior Matt Reed downed freshman Lance Dixon at 174 pounds by a 9-4 decision. The score was knotted at 3-3 after the opening frame. After an early L. Dixon escape, Reed recorded two takedowns and an escape and added a point for riding time.
In the 184-pound contest, sophomore Andrew Dixon registered a 12-5 decision over Brice Inbody. A. Dixon took a 5-3 advantage into the final period before recording two takedowns to extend his lead to seven.
Redshirt junior Brad Johnson recorded a 5-2 decision over freshman Joel Dixon in a tight 197-pound contest. Johnson led 3-1 after the beginning period, but J. Dixon registered an escape for the second frame’s only point. Johnson escaped to start the third and received a penalty point to secure his win.
The heavyweight bout ended the night as redshirt junior Ross Larson picked up a 3-1 decision over redshirt senior Mike Brown in SV-1. Each wrestler’s only point of regulation came from escapes.
“I think we should be better [than last year]. We started five true freshmen last year—six freshmen actually, so that was a pretty young team,” Cody explained. “They were unranked all year long, and they went out and fought pretty hard in a lot of situations. I know we had a lot of close matches with a lot of the top teams in the country. This year, I’m hoping to be able to go out with more experience and really come out with some big wins.”
The Sooners begin their regular season on Sunday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Albany, N.Y., for the Northeast Duals. OU returns to Norman on Nov. 19 for its home opener against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m.
