MBB: Buddy Hield Named Big 12 Player of the Week

University of Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week following his performances last week at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. It marks Hield’s fourth career conference honor, including the second this season (Nov. 23).

Hield led Oklahoma to three victories over Washington State, Hawaii and Harvard in the Hawaii holiday tournament. In those three contests, he averaged 28.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting .605 (26-43) from the field, .591 (13-22) from 3-point range and .955 (21-22) from the charity stripe. The senior, who broke the Diamond Head Classic’s scoring record (previously held by Klay Thompson) by pouring in 86 combined points, was named MVP.

In the championship final on Friday against Harvard, Hield posted a career-high 34 points, marking his fifth straight game scoring 25 or more. The last Sooner to accomplish that feat was Ryan Minor during the 1994-95 season. Hield has four total 30-point games this season, including three in the last five contests.

Through 11 games, Hield is averaging 24.9 points, fifth most in the country and highest among players from Power Five conferences. He currently stands in 10th place on OU’s all-time scoring list (1,640) and is just seven points shy of passing Eduardo Najera (1,646) into ninth place.

The Bahamas native is also averaging 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals in 31.0 minutes this season. Hield is shooting .515 (87-169) from the field and a blistering .529 (37-70) from long distance (ranked sixth in the country). Hield is currently the only player in the nation to average better than 50.0 percent shooting from the field, 50.0 percent from long distance and 90.0 percent from the charity stripe while averaging at least 20.0 points per game. He is also one of only three guards in the country to average at least 24.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.

Additionally, Deonte Burton of Iowa State was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Burton helped the Cyclones record a road victory over No. 22 Cincinnati last week.

Hield and the Sooners get back to action this Saturday, Jan. 2, at home against Iowa State inside Lloyd Noble Center at 6 p.m. CT. Tickets to Oklahoma’s Big 12 season opener are sold out, but any returned seats will go on sale at 11 a.m. CT the morning of the game, exclusively at SoonerSports.com. OU student tickets will also be available for $5 at the door, while supplies last.
