Lincoln Riley 'Understood' Cody Thomas' Decision To Leave Team to Focus on Baseball

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley was asked earlier this month if he was disappointed to lose quarterback Cody Thomas, who chose to leave the football team to focus on baseball this spring.

“I wouldn’t say disappointed,” Riley responded. “I don’t think that would be the right word. I understood it. Guys have got to do what they are passionate about.”

Thomas appeared in 12 career football games with three starts — all coming during the 2014 season — but after Baker Mayfield’s emergence last season and the addition of Austin Kendall and Kyler Murray, he decided the diamond presented a better shot at athletic success.

OU football coach Bob Stoops has said he would welcome Thomas back if he chose to return to football in the fall, when he would be a redshirt junior. (The Oklahoman)
