M Gymnastics: Kanji Oyama Named Gymnast of the Week

Oklahoma men’s gymnastics senior Kanji Oyama added another honor to his haul for the week as he was named NCAA Gymnast of the Week on Friday. Oyama posted a career-best all-around score of 91.100 in Saturday’s Senior Night meet against No. 2 Stanford to help push OU to a team mark of 452.350, the third-highest total in NCAA history.

Competing for the last time in McCasland Field House, Oyama, who was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week on Wednesday, scored at least 14.850 on every event against Stanford, including a career-high 15.600 on rings to take the event title. He also placed third on floor (15.250) and vault (15.000), fourth on parallel bars (15.300) and third on high bar (15.100).

The senior’s all-around total bested the season’s previous high mark of 90.850 from Stanford’s Akash Modi. Oyama now ranks second nationally in the all-around with a three-score average of 88.883, fourth on rings (15.400), ninth on parallel bars (15.083) and tied for 10th on floor (15.367).

The honor is the first of the year for Oyama, who won conference gymnast of the week honors twice this season.

The Sooners are back in action this weekend as they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on No. 3 Ohio State and No. 11 Air Force in a 4 p.m. CT meet on Friday night.
