WBB: Sooners Picked Third In Big 12 Preseason Vote

For the second consecutive year, the Oklahoma women’s basketball team was picked third in the Big 12 Preseason Poll, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The order of finish was determined by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team.

Baylor was picked by the Big 12’s head coaches to win the league crown for the second straight season. The Lady Bears were followed by Texas (73 points; one first-place vote), OU (61 points), West Virginia (57 points), Kansas State (50 points), TCU (34 points), Iowa State (28 points), Texas Tech (28 points), Oklahoma State (23 points) and Kansas (15 points).

The Sooners return four starters from last year’s squad that made the program’s 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round.

The returning starters are redshirt senior guard and preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention selection Peyton Little (10.9 ppg), senior guard Gioya Carter (8.5 ppg), junior guard Gabbi Ortiz (6.8 ppg) and redshirt senior guard Maddie Manning (8.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg). OU also brings back Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year Vionise Pierre-Louis (9.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg).

The Sooners return 82 percent of their scoring, 94 percent of their assists and 82 percent of their rebounds from last season. OU’s roster also features six seniors, the most for a Sherri Coale-lead team since the 2006-07 season.

OU begins its 2016-17 schedule on Nov. 2 with an exhibition home game against Midwestern State and opens the regular season with Southern Illinois on Nov. 13.
