Peterson, a 12-year league veteran, is being sued for failing to repay a $5.2M loan, The Athletic reports. Chase Carlson, an attorney representing Peterson, says the Washington Redskins back was “trusting the wrong people.”
According to The Athletic, Peterson had defaulted on multiple loans requiring him to borrow more eventually caught in a cycle of being unable to pay debts.
In a statement hours after The Athletic report, Carlson told Pro Football Talk, “The truth behind Adrian Peterson’s current financial situation is more than is being reported at this time.”
“Because of ongoing legal matters, I am unable to go into detail, but I will say this is yet another situation of an athlete trusting the wrong people and being taken advantage of by those he trusted. Adrian and his family look forward to sharing further details when appropriate,” Carlson said in a prepared a statement.
The 34-year-old Peterson has made nearly $100M in career earnings. Earlier this year, Peterson and Washington agreed to a two-year, $5M contract.
