WR Sterling Shepard Suffers Fractured Thumb

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a broken thumb in first day of practice on Thursday, the team announced.

The injury occurred after an attempted catch, an x-ray later revealed the fracture after practice. Shepard, will be evaluated week-to-week by the team medical staff.

The 26-year-old former Oklahoma standout signed a four-year, $41 million extension in April.

Shepard looked to emerge in training camp as the primary target after the team traded WR Odell Beckham Jr to the Cleveland Browns in the off-season. Pro Football Focus considered Shepard as the Giants’ biggest X-factor heading into 2019 season because of his prevalence for intermediate passes.

Shepard, Giants travel to Dallas to open the regular season on September 8.
