Samaje Perine Awarded Game Ball After Breaking Rushing Record

Samaje Perine staked his claim in Sooners lore Monday night against Auburn, snatching Oklahoma's all-time rushing record from its previous owner, Billy Sims.

While the record one stood at 4,118 yards, Perine's new mark is 4,122 yards in just three years. Sims wasted no time congratulating Perine on Twitter.

After Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops finished his sessions with the media at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, he joined ESPN's Scott Van Pelt on SportsCenter to discuss Perine's record-setting performance.

Sooners Await NFL Draft Decisions From Several Players

The Sooners are still waiting on running backs Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine and safety Steven Parker to announce their intentions. There’s still a month for them to do so. All three field daily recruiting pitches from teammates.

“You talk to them and tell them that you are there for them if they ever want to talk,” Baker Mayfield said. “I’m here to listen. They know how I feel. They know I want them to come back and play with me for another year. The type of guys they are, the type of special players that they are, I’d love to have them. But when it comes down to it, it is their decision and I’ll support them no matter what.”

Of the four that have announced they're staying, each had his own reasons. Brown and Thomas could turn themselves into first-round picks. Okoronkwo is just scratching the surface of what he could become. This was his first season to start.

Samaje Perine Will Not Play Against Iowa State on Thursday Night

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops doesn't expect RB Samaje Perine to be healthy enough to play during the Sooners' next game at Iowa State on Thursday night.

Perine left the Sooners' game against Kansas State two weeks ago with a pulled muscle in his leg and was expected to be out two to three weeks at the time of the injury.

Samaje Perine Out At Least Two Weeks After Injury

Bob Stoops announced Monday that Samaje Perine will miss at least two weeks, possibly three, as he deals with a hamstring injury. Perine suffered the injury early in Oklahoma's 38-17 win against Kansas State.

He had rushed for 23 yards on three carries during Oklahoma's opening drive, and then capped the possession off with a 25-yard touchdown catch to give Oklahoma an early lead. It was on that touchdown, however, that Perine tweaked his hamstring as he never returned to the game.

KSU Defensive Lineman: Mixon, Perine Are 'Pretty Easy To Tackle'

Tackling Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon? That’s a piece of cake — at least that’s what one Kansas State defensive end told reporters Tuesday.

Reggie Walker, a 6-2 freshman, said he talked to fellow defensive end Jordan Willis about the senior's experience playing Oklahoma last season and came to the conclusion that tackling OU’s running backs wasn’t a tough task.

Riley: Pace Isn't An Issue For Samaje Perine

Running back Samaje Perine entered the season needing less than 1,100 yards to become OU’s all-time leading rusher. After two games, he still needs a little less than 1,000 to set the mark. He’s only rushed for 89 yards in two games.

Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley doesn’t think Perine will have a problem reaching the mark.

“His pace, after two games last year, was probably to have 200 yards the whole season and that changed quite a bit,” Riley said. “It always comes and goes in this offense. There are games where these guys have big games and those guys have big games. Those are things you have to judge at the end of the year.” (Norman Transcript)
