Live Blog: Oklahoma vs Kansas State

No. 22 Oklahoma Sooners (4-3) host unranked Kansas State Wildcats (5-3) at 6:00 p.m. in a Halloween night matchup. The Sooners celebrate homecoming tonight, Oklahoma QB Landry Jones hopes to celebrate an OU win to kickoff the official beginning of the Jones-era. This past week QB Sam Bradford, 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and Oklahoma's leading all-time passer, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery and announced he'll fore-go his senior year and enter the 2010 NFL draft. Only one of Oklahoma's losses has been with Jones as starter at quarterback.

The Sooners are coming off a 35-13 victory against Big 12 North contender Kansas last weekend. The Oklahoma defense held Kansas the then-No. 2 offense in the nation 200 yards below their season average. Jones, threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns.

Last weekend, Kansas State coasted to a 20-6 victory over Colorado. The Wildcats' running back Daniel Thompson produced half of KSU's 284 total yards of offense, Thompson rushed for 145 yards and 18 yards receiving. With the win over Colorado, Kansas State became the Big 12 North leader.

With an Oklahoma win tonight, the Sooners are still in Big 12 south title contention if they win out. However, Sooners need Oklahoma State to defeat Texas tonight, and defeat is an understatement. The Cowboys must win big.

QB Prospect Still Committed to OU

Blake Bell is still committed to Oklahoma despite Landry Jones: Blake Bell, a Bishop Carroll Catholic standout in Wichita, Kan., turned down offers from Georgia, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame and several others to play for the Sooners. The recruiting site Rivals.com ranks Bell as the No. 4 quarterback in the country. Bell won't be bound to Oklahoma until he signs a letter of intent in February. And despite the Sooners sudden shift at quarterback, his commitment hasn't wavered. "I'm still excited," Bell said. "People ask me if I'm reconsidering or stuff like that, but not really. OU, Big 12 Deny Report OU-Texas Will Be Primetime

Report of OU-Texas will be primetime is false, says Oklahoma: Heads turned this morning when a Dallas Morning News article labeled next year’s Oklahoma-Texas football game "an evening game." After years of afternoon kickoffs, could the Red River Rivalry be moving under the Cotton Bowl lights? Uh, no. OU released a statement declaring the report "false," and announced "no start time for that game has been determined, and it is unlikely that the determination will be made until this summer." (Tulsa World) MORE: Big 12 denies report too: Tim Allen, deputy commissioner of the Big 12 conference, confirmed that no time has been set for the game. "The game time for next year will not be established until at least June 1, 2010, when our television partners begin to make their selections," Allen said. "It is about 99 percent likely to remain at 11 a.m., with a possible move as late as 2:30 p.m. I am not sure where you got your information, but I do not see a scenario where the game is at night." Later on Wednesday, he added: "There has not been any discussion by those that do the scheduling – the Conference and the television networks – about playing next year's game at night." Bradford's Shoulder Surgery Called a Success

Reports indicate that procedure went as expected: Sam Bradford underwent successful surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday morning in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. James Andrews, widely recognized for his work on a number of athletes, performed the procedure. The operation began at 10:10 a.m., and was completed by 10:45 a.m. The 2008 Heisman Trophy winner was back in his hospital room by 12:15 p.m. "Dr. Andrews said it was just as we expected," said Sam's father, Kent, who was able to witness part of the operation. "It all looked great in the end and everyone seems to feel very good about it." The elder Bradford said his son was experiencing some soreness, but was otherwise resting comfortably and had already regained his appetite. "He was hungry and he's been eating so that's a good sign," Kent said. The Oklahoma quarterback will go through a limited exercise session on Wednesday and expects to return to his home state sometime in the next 24-48 hours. "The report we got was that everything went about as well as it could and obviously we're very happy for Sam and his family," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "We look forward to getting him back in Norman so that we can assist with his recovery and rehabilitation." (SoonerSports PR)

Former Oklahoma Captain Dies

Gilmer Lewis dies at age 71: Lewis, an All-Big Seven tackle who was captain of the 1959 Oklahoma football team, died Monday. He was 71. "Gilmer Lewis was one of those special guys," said Jakie Sandifer, a teammate of Lewis' in 1957-58. "Driving by the stadium yesterday, I thought of Gilmer, what a good guy he was. Just a damn good guy. He was a cut above. "Quiet guy. Minded his own business. Hell of a football player." Lewis was born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas. He played for the Sooners from 1957-59 and was one of the players infamously taken ill after eating at Chicago's Chez Paree club two nights before the 1959 Northwestern game. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Rose Chapel of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the funeral. (The Oklaohman)

NCAA Denies Granger Medical Hardship

DeMarcus Granger denied medical hardship waiver: The NCAA has denied a request for a medical hardship that would allow Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger to play another season for the Sooners. "It's very unfortunate for DeMarcus," OU coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "He has fought through that back, and he has part of a nerve that hasn't quite fully come back yet. They believe it will, it just hasn't over time to where he's not able to fire the one leg as strong or quick as he needs to. "It's been frustrating. He's been a great teammate. He's been out there working, up until the last week, trying to help. He's just not able to quite do it." Granger has been sidelined all season, his fifth at OU, after undergoing back surgery last December. (Tulsa World)

Sam Bradford Decides to Have Surgery

Bradford to announce he'll have surgery and go pro: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford announced today that he will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. Noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala. "I dreamed about coming to Oklahoma my whole life," Bradford said. "That's the reason I came back for this season. And I came back to play, not sit on the bench. That's the reason I tried to play after the injury. I'm very disappointed that it didn't work out differently. "Under these circumstances, and after talking to several people, this is the right thing for me to do at this point." Bradford added that he intends to enter the NFL Draft if the recovery goes as anticipated. The rehabilitation time for the surgery is estimated at four-six months. "I'll be up to the challenge," said Bradford, who will work with OU's training staff during his rehabilitation. OU Head Coach Bob Stoops said he supports Bradford's decision. "We want Sam to pursue the best option for his recovery and future," he said. "We obviously feel this is best for his long-range future. "Sam has led us to two Big 12 championships and an appearance in the national title game, and has demonstrated uncommon leadership skills. He is an absolute role model as a student-athlete and loyal teammate. "We appreciate the incredible contributions he has made to this program and university." (SoonerSports PR)

No. 25 Oklahoma Sooners (3-3) face No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks (5-1) in Lawrence, KS, the Sooners are without starting quarterback Sam Bradford. Bradford, reinjured his shoulder last week in a loss to Texas, has yet to announce if he'll have season-ending surgery.

UPDATE: Report: Bradford to have surgery: ESPN's Joe Schad is reporting, There is a "very good chance" Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford will announce he is having season-ending surgery on his shoulder, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad on Wednesday. Coach Bob Stoops said Bradford needed to gather more information before choosing what to do about his injured right, throwing shoulder. "He just wasn't ready to fully answer everything that'll want to be asked and for sure what he wants to do just yet, until he has a few more people to visit with," Stoops said after the Sooners' practice. Bradford Ruled Out Against Kansas

Bradford Reinjures His Shoulder

Is Bradford's collegiate career over? Last year's Heisman Trophy winner, Bradford reinjured his right throwing shoulder in the second series of a 16-13 loss to Texas , likely ending his season and possibly his college career. "I really can't answer that," Bradford said when asked if he played in his last Oklahoma-Texas game. "I'm not sure. I'll have to make that decision at the end of this year." (SportingNews)

Texas Survives To Beat Oklahoma, 16-13

Texas defeats Oklahoma, 16-13: Colt McCoy was a mess. His right thumbnail was ready to fall off, a nagging cold was wearing him down and Oklahoma was confusing him with blitzes he'd never seen. Then, with a chance to put the game away for No. 3 Texas midway through the fourth quarter, he threw an interception that could've turned into a go-ahead touchdown for the Sooners. McCoy salvaged it all, though. He made a game-saving tackle on the pickoff return, then, after his defense got him the ball back, managed to grind out the final 3:31, sending No. 3 Texas to a 16-13 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma on Saturday. Okay, here we go. Texas' revenge campaign kicks off in Dallas against its bitter rival. Of course, the biggest question is how Sam Bradford's aching shoulder will hold up. Stoops announces Ryan Broyles and Quinton Carter will start Saturday: Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops announced Friday afternoon that Ryan Broyles and Quinton Carter will start for the Sooners in Saturday's game against Texas. OU and UT meet at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in the AT&T Red River Rivalry with kickoff slated for 11 a.m., on ABC. Broyles suffered a shoulder injury early in the game at Miami on Oct. 3. His missed last week's game against Baylor. The sophomore receiver leads Oklahoma in receptions (23), receiving yards (346) and touchdowns (7). Before being sidelined, he also was the Sooners' leader in all-purpose yards, kickoff return yards and punt return yards. Carter, a safety, left last week's game against Baylor with a knee ailment, but has been cleared for this week's contest. Sooners forced to take four FGs in Bradford's return: Sam Bradford came back Saturday. And as he did so often during his 2008 Heisman-winning season, the Oklahoma quarterback threw for big yardage (389). The Sooners' offense also put up some circa-'08 numbers (589). So why, then, did the 19th-ranked Sooners, now 3-2, still struggle to put the ball in the end zone for much of their 33-7 win over Baylor? Why did OU lead just 14-7 at halftime on the Robert Griffin-less Bears and go nearly the entire second half without a touchdown? OU held a seminar Wednesday with officers from Norman and university police departments. Bradford practiced Monday and said his arm feels better than the week before. But he still doesn't know if he'll be ready by Saturday. "That's part of the whole process, being able to make all the throws. All the throws don't happen in the pocket. They happen outside the pocket, off balance, you know, where there's more stress put on your arm. I think as the week goes along, I'm gonna have to figure out what throws I can and can't make." Beal Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Oklahoma DE Jeremy Beal earns Big 12 weekly honors: Oklahoma defensive end Jeremy Beal has been named the Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday's game at Miami. The junior from Carrollton, Texas, logged three sacks in Oklahoma's 21-20 loss at Miami. He finished with five total tackles and also knocked down two passes. It was the second-straight game in which Beal had three sacks. He ranks No. 3 nationally in sacks and No. 8 in tackles for loss. Four of his eight TFL have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Beal now has six sacks through four games this season. The school record of 14 was set in 1997 by Martin Chase. Other weekly Big 12 honors for the week went to Kansas State's Grant Gregory (offense) and Emmanuel Lamur (special teams). (SoonerSports PR)

Sooners To Receive Payout From 'Canes

Miami to payout 350k to OU: Tulsa World is reporting.. Within 90 days, Oklahoma will receive a check from Miami for $350,000. That's the same amount OU paid Miami for the 2007 game in Norman. Big 12 refs will work the game in Miami (ACC refs worked the game in Norman). Any breach of contract would have required a $750,000 buyout. The visitor also gets 60 bench passes and 5,000 tickets (including up to 330 band and spirit seats and 300 comp tickets). (Tulsa World)
