Live Blog: Oklahoma vs Kansas State

No. 22 Oklahoma Sooners (4-3) host unranked Kansas State Wildcats (5-3) at 6:00 p.m. in a Halloween night matchup. The Sooners celebrate homecoming tonight, Oklahoma QB Landry Jones hopes to celebrate an OU win to kickoff the official beginning of the Jones-era. This past week QB Sam Bradford, 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and Oklahoma's leading all-time passer, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery and announced he'll fore-go his senior year and enter the 2010 NFL draft. Only one of Oklahoma's losses has been with Jones as starter at quarterback.

The Sooners are coming off a 35-13 victory against Big 12 North contender Kansas last weekend. The Oklahoma defense held Kansas the then-No. 2 offense in the nation 200 yards below their season average. Jones, threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns.

Last weekend, Kansas State coasted to a 20-6 victory over Colorado. The Wildcats' running back Daniel Thompson produced half of KSU's 284 total yards of offense, Thompson rushed for 145 yards and 18 yards receiving. With the win over Colorado, Kansas State became the Big 12 North leader.

With an Oklahoma win tonight, the Sooners are still in Big 12 south title contention if they win out. However, Sooners need Oklahoma State to defeat Texas tonight, and defeat is an understatement. The Cowboys must win big.

With all that said, feel free to join the live blog.

QB Prospect Still Committed to OU

Blake Bell is still committed to Oklahoma despite Landry Jones: Blake Bell, a Bishop Carroll Catholic standout in Wichita, Kan., turned down offers from Georgia, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame and several others to play for the Sooners. The recruiting site Rivals.com ranks Bell as the No. 4 quarterback in the country. Bell won't be bound to Oklahoma until he signs a letter of intent in February. And despite the Sooners sudden shift at quarterback, his commitment hasn't wavered. "I'm still excited," Bell said. "People ask me if I'm reconsidering or stuff like that, but not really. I'm still excited about coming into it. I can't wait to get on the field and show them what I've got." (The Oklahoman)

OU, Big 12 Deny Report OU-Texas Will Be Primetime

Report of OU-Texas will be primetime is false, says Oklahoma: Heads turned this morning when a Dallas Morning News article labeled next year’s Oklahoma-Texas football game "an evening game." After years of afternoon kickoffs, could the Red River Rivalry be moving under the Cotton Bowl lights? Uh, no. OU released a statement declaring the report "false," and announced "no start time for that game has been determined, and it is unlikely that the determination will be made until this summer." (Tulsa World) MORE: Big 12 denies report too: Tim Allen, deputy commissioner of the Big 12 conference, confirmed that no time has been set for the game. "The game time for next year will not be established until at least June 1, 2010, when our television partners begin to make their selections," Allen said. "It is about 99 percent likely to remain at 11 a.m., with a possible move as late as 2:30 p.m. I am not sure where you got your information, but I do not see a scenario where the game is at night." Later on Wednesday, he added: "There has not been any discussion by those that do the scheduling – the Conference and the television networks – about playing next year's game at night." Bradford's Shoulder Surgery Called a Success

Reports indicate that procedure went as expected: Sam Bradford underwent successful surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday morning in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. James Andrews, widely recognized for his work on a number of athletes, performed the procedure. The operation began at 10:10 a.m., and was completed by 10:45 a.m. The 2008 Heisman Trophy winner was back in his hospital room by 12:15 p.m. "Dr. Andrews said it was just as we expected," said Sam's father, Kent, who was able to witness part of the operation. "It all looked great in the end and everyone seems to feel very good about it." The elder Bradford said his son was experiencing some soreness, but was otherwise resting comfortably and had already regained his appetite. "He was hungry and he's been eating so that's a good sign," Kent said. The Oklahoma quarterback will go through a limited exercise session on Wednesday and expects to return to his home state sometime in the next 24-48 hours. "The report we got was that everything went about as well as it could and obviously we're very happy for Sam and his family," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "We look forward to getting him back in Norman so that we can assist with his recovery and rehabilitation." (SoonerSports PR)

Former Oklahoma Captain Dies

Gilmer Lewis dies at age 71: Lewis, an All-Big Seven tackle who was captain of the 1959 Oklahoma football team, died Monday. He was 71. "Gilmer Lewis was one of those special guys," said Jakie Sandifer, a teammate of Lewis' in 1957-58. "Driving by the stadium yesterday, I thought of Gilmer, what a good guy he was. Just a damn good guy. He was a cut above. "Quiet guy. Minded his own business. Hell of a football player." Lewis was born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas. He played for the Sooners from 1957-59 and was one of the players infamously taken ill after eating at Chicago's Chez Paree club two nights before the 1959 Northwestern game. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Rose Chapel of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the funeral. (The Oklaohman)

NCAA Denies Granger Medical Hardship

DeMarcus Granger denied medical hardship waiver: The NCAA has denied a request for a medical hardship that would allow Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger to play another season for the Sooners. "It's very unfortunate for DeMarcus," OU coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "He has fought through that back, and he has part of a nerve that hasn't quite fully come back yet. They believe it will, it just hasn't over time to where he's not able to fire the one leg as strong or quick as he needs to. "It's been frustrating. He's been a great teammate. He's been out there working, up until the last week, trying to help. He's just not able to quite do it." Granger has been sidelined all season, his fifth at OU, after undergoing back surgery last December. (Tulsa World)

Notable Quotes:
On Drew Allen:
"He gets the usual snaps that a No. 2 guy would get. I haven't counted them up but I feel comfortable with it. He's doing a nice job, he's coming along and getting better and making good improvement. We're happy with what he's doing."

On Tress Way place kicking:
"I just don't feel that Jimmy (Stevens) has been consistent as he needs to be. Tress has showed me enough in practice that he is much better than he was a year ago and he's been more consistent. He deserves the opportunity and we will see how he handles it."

Stoops: Landry is Similar to Sam

Stoops: Both Jones and Bradford are comparable: Now that Sam Bradford is out for the year, having opted for shoulder surgery, the comparisons have returned. "He's similiar to Sam in that he's a very humble guy. He has a great passion to play. He has a calm demeanor to him," OU coach Bob Stoops said of Jones on Monday morning's Big 12 teleconference. "Those kinds of guys have a calm presence to them and relaxed look. But they’re really competitive. It just kind of resonates." (Tulsa World)

Sam Bradford Decides to Have Surgery

Bradford to announce he'll have surgery and go pro: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford announced today that he will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. Noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala. "I dreamed about coming to Oklahoma my whole life," Bradford said. "That's the reason I came back for this season. And I came back to play, not sit on the bench. That's the reason I tried to play after the injury. I'm very disappointed that it didn't work out differently. "Under these circumstances, and after talking to several people, this is the right thing for me to do at this point." Bradford added that he intends to enter the NFL Draft if the recovery goes as anticipated. The rehabilitation time for the surgery is estimated at four-six months. "I'll be up to the challenge," said Bradford, who will work with OU's training staff during his rehabilitation. OU Head Coach Bob Stoops said he supports Bradford's decision. "We want Sam to pursue the best option for his recovery and future," he said. "We obviously feel this is best for his long-range future. "Sam has led us to two Big 12 championships and an appearance in the national title game, and has demonstrated uncommon leadership skills. He is an absolute role model as a student-athlete and loyal teammate. "We appreciate the incredible contributions he has made to this program and university." (SoonerSports PR)

Texas Survives To Beat Oklahoma, 16-13

Texas defeats Oklahoma, 16-13: Colt McCoy was a mess. His right thumbnail was ready to fall off, a nagging cold was wearing him down and Oklahoma was confusing him with blitzes he'd never seen. Then, with a chance to put the game away for No. 3 Texas midway through the fourth quarter, he threw an interception that could've turned into a go-ahead touchdown for the Sooners. McCoy salvaged it all, though. He made a game-saving tackle on the pickoff return, then, after his defense got him the ball back, managed to grind out the final 3:31, sending No. 3 Texas to a 16-13 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma on Saturday. OU vs. Texas Predictions

Jeff Dillon, Bleacher Report
Okay, here we go. Texas' revenge campaign kicks off in Dallas against its bitter rival. Of course, the biggest question is how Sam Bradford's aching shoulder will hold up. He looked okay last week versus Baylor. But "okay" is not going to cut it against the Longhorns. Texas benefited last season from a huge game from Brian Orakpo. The Longhorns need another defensive player to step up in this year's game to put pressure on Bradford early (Sergio Kindle? Where are you?) If they get that, this one could be over early... The Red River Rivalry will be hopping like usual. Stoops Favors Home-and-Home Series For OU-Texas

Stoops wouldn't mind home-and-home series for OU-Texas: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops points out the atmosphere at the Cotton Bowl when Oklahoma plays Texas is special. But if he had his way, Stoops would like the series to periodically be played at Texas' Memorial Stadium and OU's Owen Field. "I always felt it'd be pretty neat to play it home-and-home once in a while," Stoops said Tuesday during his weekly press conference. "That'd be pretty cool, too." (The Oklahoman)

Johnson: Broyles Will Play Against Texas

Former Sooner WR Manuel Johnson expects Ryan Broyles to play: Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Manuel Johnson, who is on the team's practice squad after playing at Oklahoma last season, said Wednesday that he expects injured Sooners receiver Ryan Broyles to play Saturday against Texas in Dallas. OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said earlier this week that there is really no chance that Broyles could injure himself worse by playing. It really comes down to range of motion and pain tollerance for Broyles, Wilson said, and how productive he can be for the team. Johnson said he often texts and talks to Broyles and is confident that he'll play against the Longhorns. Johnson played with Broyles last season in Norman. "Yeah, he'll play," Johnson said from the Cowboys practice facility at Valley Ranch. "It will help." (Dallas Morning News)

Reynolds, a fifth year senior, has suffered three major knee injuries during his time at Oklahoma. (Norman Transcript)

Stoops Compares DeMarco Murray to Adrian Peterson

Stoops makes comparisons of Murray to Peterson: Last week, DeMarco Murray did his best impression of a Mack Truck and sent Baylor's All-Big 12 safety, Jordan Lake, flailing out of bounds to cap off a run on the right sideline. "He's always been a little more physical than I think people have ever looked at or given him credit for, and I've always felt that," said coach Bob Stoops. "Everyone thinks of Adrian (Peterson) as being so quick and strong, well, he's about the same size, so he's pretty close." But more impressive for Stoops than the flashy highlights has been the Las Vegas native’s development into a complete player. "He does the little things, too. Protecting, he's good with his hands," Stoops said. "He can do everything." (The Oklahoman)

WR Broyles May Play Against No. 3 Texas

Stoops: Simmons Out; Broyles may play against Texas: Starting left guard Brian Simmons will miss No. 20 Oklahoma's game against third-ranked Texas this Saturday with a right knee injury. Simmons left in the third quarter of the Sooners' 33-7 victory over Baylor last week, hopping toward the sideline before trainers met him and helped him the rest of the way off the field. Stoops refused to say how long Simmons will be out. However, Stoops says Ryan Broyles, the Sooners' leading receiver, returned to practice and "there's a chance he could play" Saturday in Dallas. OU Lineman Suffers Knee Injury

Pair of Sooners suffer injuries in Baylor win: Starting left guard Brian Simmons left No. 19 Oklahoma's game against Baylor on Saturday after hurting his right knee, but coach Bob Stoops says it's too early to know the extent of the injury. Simmons started hopping to the sidelines after a second-down running play with about 5 minutes left in the third quarter. Stoops also says it's too soon to know the extent of an apparent left leg injury suffered by starting safety Quinton Carter, who also left the game in the third quarter. (AP/Dallas Morning News)

Sooners Defeat Bears 33-7

Sooners forced to take four FGs in Bradford's return: Sam Bradford came back Saturday. And as he did so often during his 2008 Heisman-winning season, the Oklahoma quarterback threw for big yardage (389). The Sooners' offense also put up some circa-'08 numbers (589). So why, then, did the 19th-ranked Sooners, now 3-2, still struggle to put the ball in the end zone for much of their 33-7 win over Baylor? Why did OU lead just 14-7 at halftime on the Robert Griffin-less Bears and go nearly the entire second half without a touchdown? Because as great as it is to have Bradford back, the Sooners still miss Ryan Bryoles. And Jermaine Gresham. And all those offensive linemen from last year. (SI/Stewart Mandel)

Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford to start against Baylor: Sam Bradford, winner of the 2008 Heisman Trophy, will start at quarterback for Oklahoma in the Sooners' game against Baylor, Saturday. The junior has been out since the season opener (Sept. 5) when he suffered a sprained shoulder joint. "Sam has had a great week of practice and is ready to play," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops after a morning meeting with Bradford. "We're obviously excited to have him back. "We remain very pleased with the work Landry Jones did in replacing Sam and our entire program has a lot of confidence in his ability," Stoops added. (SoonerSports PR)

Law enforcement to crack down on unlicensed merchandise: University of Oklahoma officials and local law enforcement agencies plan to crack down on the sale of unlicensed merchandise with university logos. OU held a seminar Wednesday with officers from Norman and university police departments. OU athletic department director of licensing Renata Hays says upcoming sweeps will target stores and those who come to Norman on football game days to sell counterfeit products. She says first-time violators would receive warnings, along with demands to remove the items in question. (AP/The Oklahoman)

Bradford Hopes to Return at Some Point

Bradford makes not guarantee of return: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford spoke to reporters for the first time since Sept. 7 on Tuesday and left no doubt he plans to play again this season. "I don't know if I can give you a definite answer. But right now, I do feel like yes, I will be back at some point," he said. The Sooners face Baylor at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Owen Field. Bradford practiced Monday and said his arm feels better than the week before. But he still doesn't know if he'll be ready by Saturday. "That's part of the whole process, being able to make all the throws. All the throws don't happen in the pocket. They happen outside the pocket, off balance, you know, where there's more stress put on your arm. I think as the week goes along, I'm gonna have to figure out what throws I can and can't make." Stoops Defends Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson

Coach Bob Stoops defends Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson: Head coach Bob Stoops came to the aid of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who has been criticized by fans and media for being too conservative in his play-calling during Oklahoma's 21-20 loss at Miami. "Those people, I'm sure they're good play-callers after the fact; they can call plays when they get their team," Stoops told reporters after Monday's practice. "Our game plan was what it had been all along; I don't see where people get that. We went right down the field and scored on the first drive of the game. We were calling those same plays throughout the game. "They don't look as good when they're defended as well or you get a holding call out on the perimeter. I don't see it that way. I thought we called the game the same really throughout." (More at The Oklahoman)

Beal Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Oklahoma DE Jeremy Beal earns Big 12 weekly honors: Oklahoma defensive end Jeremy Beal has been named the Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday's game at Miami. The junior from Carrollton, Texas, logged three sacks in Oklahoma's 21-20 loss at Miami. He finished with five total tackles and also knocked down two passes. It was the second-straight game in which Beal had three sacks. He ranks No. 3 nationally in sacks and No. 8 in tackles for loss. Four of his eight TFL have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Beal now has six sacks through four games this season. The school record of 14 was set in 1997 by Martin Chase. Other weekly Big 12 honors for the week went to Kansas State's Grant Gregory (offense) and Emmanuel Lamur (special teams). (SoonerSports PR)

Bradford Questionable For OU-Baylor

Latest on Bradford: No timetable given for return: On Monday, Bob Stoops said Sam Bradford, the Heisman Trophy winner won't play until he's "fully capable." "We'll see," Stoops said during Monday's teleconference. "It's too early. I'm not getting into how close or far [he was to playing Saturday against Miami]. The bottom line is he wasn't where he needed to be." Stoops was asked several times about Bradford's availability and wouldn't budge. "Everyone wants me to give them an answer I can't give," Stoops said. "Until you can see a guy progress, how do you know? Until you get out and work it, you don't have any idea." (ESPNDallas.com)

Stoops: Broyles to Miss 2-4 Weeks

OU WR Ryan Broyles to miss only 2-4 weeks: Sophomore receiver Ryan Broyles fractured his shoulder blade on the Sooners' second play from scrimmage against Miami, but should only miss two to four weeks, said coach Bob Stoops. Stoops originally said Broyles would be out of the lineup four to six weeks, but called the injury a "light fracture" on Monday.  The process for Bradford's return would remain the same, and the junior Heisman winner is set to return to practice later today.  "Until you see them progress you don't know. Until you get out there and work it, you don't know," Stoops said. (The Oklahoman)

OU's Special Teams Step-Up Against Miami

Special teams nearly perfect against Miami: Although the offense sputtered for most of the game without its three best playmakers, the special teams units nearly proved the difference. Kicker Jimmy Stevens was perfect on the evening, nailing a pair of field goals and a pair of extra points. Freshman punter Tress Way averaged more than 50 yards per punt. And junior Dominique Franks set up Oklahoma's final scoring drive with a winding return after fielding the ball on his own 1-yard line. "There were a lot of areas that were very good," said coach Bob Stoops. (The Oklahoman)

Since losing to USC in the 2005 Orange Bowl, Oklahoma has gone 16-13 in games played outside of the state of Oklahoma, and 29-0 around home. Last week was an aberration. At home, in a game like this, the Cane defense will be flying around all over the place making life tough for Jones, there will be at least three key takeaways, and Harris will go back to being Harris again for just enough scoring drives to get by. It's not going to be a smooth win for the Canes, but it'll be a good one... Miami over Oklahoma, 20-16
