Adrian Peterson: 'I Won't Ever Use A Switch Again'

Former Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson had expressed remorse for injuring his son and maintained he was disciplining him – with a "switch" from a tree – the way he was disciplined as a child. If Peterson meets the court's requirements, no conviction will go on his record. But Peterson, a father of six children by six women, knows he faces a lifelong challenge to prove he's not an absentee parent, not a child abuser, not any of the demons he's been portrayed as since the incident.

"I won't ever use a switch again," Peterson said. "There's different situations where a child needs to be disciplined as far as timeout, taking their toys away, making them take a nap. There's so many different ways to discipline your kids."

In the more than 90-minute phone interview – Peterson's first extensive public remarks since his Sept. 11 indictment – he spoke with USA TODAY Sports on a wide variety of topics, including why he refused to attend a hearing with the NFL before Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him as well as his future with the Minnesota Vikings.

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Derrick Woods saw his first action since mid-September in Saturday’s game at Texas Tech.

Woods had been battling an ankle injury since the Tennessee game.

“Hopefully he can start doing some of the things he did special teams-wise especially,” Bob Stoops said. “He was great in that regard a year ago and we need him back doing some things that way.”

Sooners wide receivers coach Jay Norvell said there was also still a place for Woods on offense as well.

OU's Stoops, Shepard Share Disney Spirit Award

Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops and junior wide receiver Sterling Shepard will receive this year’s Disney Sports Spirit Award - an honor given annually by Disney Sports to college football’s most inspirational figure - at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11 at Walt Disney World Resort.

Following the tragic death of former Sooners’ receiver and graduate assistant coach Derrick Shepard, Stoops selflessly became a father figure to Derrick Shepard’s six-year-old son Sterling Shepard and welcomed him into the Sooners’ family. In a remarkable twist of fate, that fatherless young boy grew into a superstar football player who, at the end of his high school career in suburban Oklahoma City, fittingly signed to play for the University of Oklahoma where he is among the top receivers in college football.

Sterling Shepard has inspired the college football world with his remarkable perseverance in overcoming the loss of his father while climbing his way to the top of college football.

“Derrick Shepard’s legacy lives on through his son, Sterling, who I’m privileged to coach,” said Stoops. “I’ve been blessed to watch Sterling grow into a talented young man who serves as a tremendous example for our entire team in all that he does.

Baseball: Breast Cancer Awareness Game

The University of Oklahoma baseball team hosts Trinity (TX) University for its Breast Cancer Awareness Game Friday, November 7 at 6:00 pm at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Admission to the game is free.

The Sooners, coming off a 29-29 season in 2014, take the field against a Tigers squad that went 33-10 and reached the NCAA Tournament after claiming the SCAC Championship.

Oklahoma head coach Pete Hughes began his head coaching career at Trinity in 1997, where he compiled a 52-30 record in two seasons before moving on to Boston College. Hughes’ replacement at Trinity was his assistant coach Tim Scannell, who enters his 17th season at the helm of the program this year. Since taking over, Scannell is 518-208.

Following its second annual ALS Halloween Game, the Sooners extend their 19 Ways community outreach initiative as they host their first Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The driving force behind the effort to raise breast cancer awareness comes from Scanell’s wife Christa, who was diagnosed with breast cancer within the last year.

OU Soccer Opens Big 12 Championship Play

SOONER NOTEBOOK: NOTES FOR WEEK 12

1. FIRST ROUND REMATCH

The postseason is here, and the Oklahoma soccer team is back in the mix. The No. 6 seeded Sooners will open the 2014 Big 12 Soccer Championship on Wednesday evening, facing No. 3 Kansas under a week after the two teams last met. Oklahoma came away with a win in the match, snagging its fourth victory this season over a top-25 team with a 1-0 shutout win over the Jayhawks.

2. BACK ON TRACKOklahoma got back to its defensive roots in its win over Kansas. The victory snapped a four-match losing skid and marked the first win for OU since Oct. 5. The Sooners blanked an opponent for the seventh time this season, with goalkeeper Kaitlyn Fahrner picking up her fifth shutout victory of the year. OU’s seven shutout victories in 2014 are the third-most in a single season in program history and the most for the squad since 2010.

3. TOURNEY TIMEAfter narrowly missing postseason qualification last season, the Sooners are back in the action this weekend with a shot at the program’s first-ever Big 12 title. This weekend marks Oklahoma’s ninth conference tournament appearance all-time and its second under head coach Matt Potter. OU and Kansas have only met once previously in the postseason, with KU taking a 1-0 win in the 2003 Big 12 Soccer Championship.
