Auckland big man with a 3x3 world title

Matt Freeman grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, and attended Westlake Boys High School. He represented New Zealand at the 2013 FIBA Oceania U16 Championship and the 2014 FIBA Oceania U18 Championship.

Freeman enrolled at Oklahoma in January 2016 and played three seasons for the Sooners from 2016 to 2019, including the 2017–18 team that featured Trae Young. In April 2019 he transferred to UC Santa Barbara, where he averaged 9.4 points as a senior in 2019–20.

His pro career started in Germany in December 2020 with Gladiators Trier of the ProA, where he averaged 11.8 points in 14 games. He then played for the PS Karlsruhe Lions (10.3 points per game) and Eisbären Bremerhaven, joined the Franklin Bulls in the New Zealand NBL in 2023, and moved on to SCM U Craiova in Romania and Budapesti Honvéd in Hungary. In March 2026 he re-signed with the Franklin Bulls for a second stint in the 2026 New Zealand NBL season.

The New Zealand NBL season runs through the southern winter, and we could not confirm where Freeman is playing in 2026–27. His most recent confirmed club is the Franklin Bulls.
