'Ice Trae': the Norman North kid who led the nation in points and assists
Trae Young was born in Lubbock, Texas, the son of former Texas Tech player Rayford Young, and became a star at Norman North High School, where he averaged 42.6 points as a senior. He was OU's first five-star recruit since 2010.
His one season at Oklahoma (2017–18) was historic. He scored 43 against Oregon, tied the NCAA single-game assists record with 22 against Northwestern State and put up 48 against Oklahoma State. He averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists and became the only player ever to lead Division I in both points and assists in the same season. He was a consensus first-team All-American and won the Wayman Tisdale Award as national freshman of the year.
Drafted fifth overall by Dallas in 2018 and traded that night to Atlanta for Luka Dončić, Young became the face of the Hawks. He made four All-Star teams and an All-NBA Third Team, led Atlanta to the 2021 Eastern Conference finals and led the NBA in assists in 2024–25.
In January 2026 he was traded to the Washington Wizards, and in June he signed a four-year, $212 million contract to stay. As of October 8, 2026, Young is the Wizards' point guard.
