No big offers, no problem: the juco guard who became a consensus All-American

Ben Powers grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and attended Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, where he lettered in football and wrestling. By his junior year he was already 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, playing on both the offensive and defensive lines. Even so, he finished high school without a scholarship offer from a major program.

Powers took the long road. He spent 2015 at Butler Community College in Kansas, then enrolled at Oklahoma, where he played from 2016 to 2018. In 2018 he was named a consensus first-team All-American at guard, a remarkable rise for a player who had once been overlooked.

The Baltimore Ravens selected him in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2019 NFL draft. He worked his way from backup to starter, becoming a midseason starter in 2020 and the full-time starting guard by 2022. In March 2023 he signed a four-year, $51.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos, where he has anchored the interior of the line and plays alongside fellow Sooners Nik Bonitto and Marvin Mims Jr.

As of October 8, 2026, Powers is an active guard for the Broncos.
