Anthony Phillips

1989 · Round 12 · Pick 333 · G · Chicago Bears

Anthony Phillips was an all-state defensive tackle at Jenks High School. OU recruited him as a linebacker, but he became an offensive lineman. As a freshman he was All-Big Eight at tackle on the 1985 national title team, alongside his older brother Jon. He moved to guard in 1986, earned All-America honors there, and was a consensus All-American as a senior in 1988. He was also an Academic All-American and academic all-conference all four years. Chicago drafted him in the 12th round, 333rd overall, in 1989, but he chose a business career over pro football and became a vice president at Bank of Oklahoma. Note: public sources on him are thin, so this bio is short. Pro Football Reference has no player page for him. Tulsa World wrote on April 20, 1989: "Anthony Phillips' career at the University of Oklahoma reads like a Who's Who of college football." The Oklahoman wrote on November 25, 1987: "Also starting on the first team at down linemen are Oklahomans Greg Johnson, 6-4, 300, Mark Hutson, 6-4, 280, and Anthony Phillips, 6-3, 280."
