Bill Campbell

1943 · Round 17 · Pick 153 · B · Chicago Cardinals

Bill Campbell was born in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and played at Pawhuska High School. He lettered at Oklahoma from 1940 to 1942 and was second-team All-Big Six in 1942. The Chicago Cardinals drafted him in the 17th round, 153rd overall, in 1943. After Army Air Forces service he joined them in 1945 and started in their win in the 1947 NFL Championship Game, 28–21 over Philadelphia. He was traded to the New York Bulldogs in 1949, re-signed by the Cardinals that November, and later played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He died on October 28, 1974. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on April 9, 1943 (NewsBank page 16): "The Detroit Lions chose Al Scanland, Aggie halfback, who is still in school, and Huel Hamm, University of Oklahoma fullback. Calvin Purdin, Tulsa halfback, and Bill Campbell, Oklahoma quarterback now in the air corps, were drafted by the Chicago Cardinals."
