Greg Roberts

1979 · Round 2 · Pick 33 · G · Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Greg Roberts was born in Nacogdoches, Texas, and played at Nacogdoches High School. He played guard for Barry Switzer's Oklahoma teams from 1975 to 1978. He was first-team All-Big Eight in 1977 and 1978. As a senior in 1978 he was a unanimous All-American, the UPI Lineman of the Year and the Outland Trophy winner as the country's best interior lineman. Tampa Bay drafted him in the second round, 33rd overall, in 1979, and he made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. He started 42 of 45 games for the Buccaneers through 1982 and later played for the USFL's Memphis Showboats. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on January 13, 1980 (NewsBank page 33): "Roberts started all 18 games for Tampa Bay and was named to every all-rookie team, a bit of balm for those irritated souls who couldn't believe the lightning-quick 255-pounder didn't go in the first round last May." The same article says: "Tampa Bay made him a second-round choice — the Bucs' first in the draft and pick No. 33 overall."
