Hal Lahar

1941 · Round 9 · Pick 79 · G · Chicago Bears

Hal Lahar was born in Durant, Oklahoma, and played at Central High School in Oklahoma City. He was an All-Big Six guard at Oklahoma under Tom Stidham. The Chicago Bears drafted him in the ninth round, 79th overall, in 1941, and he played for their 1941 title team. He then served in the Navy in the South Pacific. He played for the AAFC's Buffalo Bills from 1946 to 1948. He coached Colgate (1952–1956 and 1962–1967) and Houston (1957–1961), and was the first man to return to a Division I head coaching job after leaving it for another. He later was Colgate's athletic director and an assistant commissioner of the Southwest Conference. He died on October 20, 2003. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 10, 1940 (NewsBank page 13): "Two of the five seniors on the University of Oklahoma football squad—Guard Harold Lahar and End Bill Jennings—received invitations Monday to play with the "West" team in the annual East-West charity game at San Francisco New Year's day."
