Jack Mitchell

1947 · Round 14 · Pick 122 · B · Green Bay Packers

Jack Mitchell was born in Arkansas City, Kansas. He was a quarterback at Oklahoma from 1946 to 1948 and an All-American in 1948. Green Bay drafted him in the 14th round, 122nd overall, in 1947. Instead he coached: he was head coach at Wichita (1953–1954), Arkansas (1955–1957) and Kansas (1958–1966), with a 72–61–7 record. After coaching he became publisher of The Wellington Daily News in Kansas. He died in Sun City, Arizona, on July 5, 2009. Pro Football Reference has no player page for him. SoonerStats lists him at OU for the 1946-1948 seasons. Pro Football Archives lists him as a letterman at Oklahoma in 1946, 1947 and 1948. It lists his high school as Year. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 22, 1948 (NewsBank page 51): "Two University of Oklahoma stars, Buddy Burris, all-American guard, and quarterback Jack Mitchell were listed in last year's draft because of interrupted football eligibility during the war. The Green Bay Packers claimed both." The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 20, 1946 (NewsBank page 28): "QUARTERBACKS—Jack Mitchell, Darrell Royal, Boyd Bibb, Kenneth Parker."
