Jack Shirk

1940 · Round 4 · Pick 26 · E · Chicago Cardinals

Jack Shirk was born in Oklahoma City and played at Central High School. At Oklahoma he was a third-team All-American and second-team All-Big Six end in 1938. The Chicago Cardinals drafted him in the fourth round, 26th overall, in 1940. He played one season for them, with 11 catches for 91 yards, and his infobox credits him with a 1940 Pro Bowl. In World War II he was a field artillery captain. He was captured at Salerno and held at the German POW camp Oflag 64. He died in November 1993. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. Name note: Pro Football Reference lists him as "John Shirk." The Daily Oklahoman's December 10, 1939 draft story (NewsBank page 47) lists "John Shirk, Oklahoma, end" under the Chicago Cardinals.
