Jerry Anderson
1977 · Round 4 · Pick 105 · DB · Cincinnati Bengals
Jerry Anderson was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He played defensive back at Oklahoma, and Cincinnati drafted him in the fourth round, 105th overall, in 1977. He played 14 games for the Bengals in 1977 and two for Tampa Bay in 1978, then played for the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1980 and 1981. On May 27, 1984, he pulled two motorists from floodwaters in Tulsa. Exactly five years later, on May 27, 1989, he rescued two boys who had fallen into the flooded Stones River in Murfreesboro, then went under and drowned, at 35. CBS's Rescue 911 aired his story, and the local NAACP named an annual hero award after him. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on April 24, 1977 (NewsBank page 29): "Anderson, a pre-season All-America pick, suffered a shoulder separation against Kansas and missed the rest of the season."
