John Goodman

1980 · Round 2 · Pick 56 · DE · Pittsburgh Steelers

John Richard Goodman was born on November 12, 1958, in Oklahoma City. His family moved to Phoenix and then the Dallas area, and he played at Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas. His father, who grew up in Chandler, Oklahoma, raised him as a Sooners fan. He played defensive line at Oklahoma from 1976 to 1979 under Barry Switzer and was first-team All-Big Eight in 1979, when he returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown. Pittsburgh drafted him in the second round, 56th overall, in 1980, near the end of the Steelers' dynasty. He tore his ACL in the 1980 preseason. Grokipedia says he played 64 games with 52 starts (1981–1985), with 10 sacks and three forced fumbles. He lives in Edmond, Oklahoma. Tidbit: his daughter Chelsea, an OU high jumper, is married to fellow Sooner draftee Lane Johnson. The Oklahoman wrote on March 21, 1984: "And you can bet your last Texas ticket he'd love to have the up-front defenders who played on that Orange Bowl team: nose guard Reggie Kinlaw and tackles John Goodman, Phil Tabor and Richard Turner."
