Lance Rentzel

1965 · Round 6 · Pick 48 · WR · Buffalo Bills (AFL)

Lance Rentzel was born in Flushing, New York. At Casady School in Oklahoma City he was a four-sport star, a high school All-American halfback and class valedictorian. At Oklahoma he once hitchhiked to Texas to make the Texas game, where he caught a 34-yard touchdown. As a senior he led OU in receiving and punting and was second-team All-Big Eight in 1964. He missed the 1965 Gator Bowl after signing a pro contract early. Minnesota (NFL) and Buffalo (AFL) both drafted him in 1965. He played for the Vikings, Dallas (1967–1970), where he led the NFL in touchdown catches in 1969, and the Los Angeles Rams, finishing with 268 catches for 4,826 yards. Wikipedia reports that he died on June 7, 2026. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on November 30, 1964 (NewsBank page 23): "The Sooners' Lance Rentzel, a speedy 210-pounder, went to Minnesota in the second round of the NFL and Buffalo of the AFL in the sixth round."
