Mike Vaughan
1977 · Round 4 · Pick 88 · T · New York Giants
Mike Vaughan was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma, and played high school football in Ada. He played offensive line at Oklahoma from 1973 to 1976, including the 1974 and 1975 national title teams, and was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior. The New York Giants drafted him in the fourth round, 88th overall, in 1977. Note: his Wikipedia article doesn't describe an NFL playing career. SoonerStats lists him on OU's roster 1973-76 (6-5, 275 lb in 1976), from Ada, OK. Pro Football Archives lists him as a letterman at Oklahoma in 1974 and 1975. Its transaction log shows that the New York Giants (NFL) signed him in 1977, placed him on injured reserve on 8/9/1977 and released him in 1978. soonerfb.com lists him as first-team All-Big Eight in 1975 and 1976, and as a 1976 All-American on the consensus, AFCA, FWAA and Walter Camp teams. A 2009 Oklahoman OU Idol feature says he was nicknamed the "USS Vaughan" because of his powerful style of play, that despite battling injuries he became a fourth-round pick of the Giants, and that one of his favorite players is left tackle Trent Williams.
