Randy Hughes
1975 · Round 4 · Pick 96 · DB · Dallas Cowboys
Randy Hughes was born in Oklahoma City. At Tulsa Memorial High School he was the Tulsa World's Prep Player of the Year, the first defensive back to win it. At Oklahoma he led the team with five interceptions as a junior in 1973. In 1974 he picked off three passes against Nebraska on the way to an unbeaten national title season and was a first-team All-American and an Academic All-American. His 14 career interceptions ranked fourth in school history, and he was later named to the All-Time Big Eight Team. Dallas drafted him in the fourth round, 96th overall, in 1975, part of the "Dirty Dozen" rookie class. He played safety for the Cowboys through 1980, won Super Bowl XII, and finished with nine interceptions. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on January 29, 1975 (NewsBank page 41): "Hughes was in Oklahoma City Tuesday night to appear on a radio talk show. His wife, Margo, however, had been at school during the day and did not know anything about her husband being drafted until a reporter phoned."
