Red Conkright
1937 · Round 5 · Pick 48 · C · Chicago Bears
Red Conkright was born in Beggs, Oklahoma, and played at Central High School in Tulsa. He captained Oklahoma in 1936 and was first-team All-Big Six at center. The Chicago Bears drafted him in the fifth round, 48th overall, in 1937. He played eight NFL seasons for the Bears, the Cleveland Rams, Brooklyn and Washington, mostly at center and sometimes at end, with five interceptions. He then coached for the AAFC's Browns, Mississippi State, Houston and Stephen F. Austin. Tidbit: in 1962 he took over as Oakland Raiders head coach midseason when Marty Feldman was fired. He died on October 27, 1980. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. Name note: Pro Football Reference lists him as "Bill Conkright." The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 13, 1936 (NewsBank page 49): "The Chicago Bears named William "Red" Conkright, Tulsa, crack University of Oklahoma center."
