Roy Bell
1972 · Round 9 · Pick 234 · RB · Dallas Cowboys
Roy Bell was born in Clinton, Oklahoma. At Clinton High School he won two state titles, ran for more than 6,000 yards, and lost only one game in three varsity seasons. At Oklahoma he was part of the first wishbone backfield in 1970 with Jack Mildren, Greg Pruitt and Leon Crosswhite. Dallas drafted him in the ninth round, 234th overall, in 1972, but he signed with the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos instead. He led the CFL in rushing in 1973 with 1,455 yards, won the Eddie James Memorial Trophy, and was a two-time CFL All-Star. He won the Grey Cup in 1975 and finished with 4,667 CFL rushing yards. Note: Wikipedia's text gives his OU totals as "50 carries for 1,421 yards," which can't be right, so I've left them out. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on February 3, 1972 (NewsBank page 29): "Sooners selected Wednesday were linebacker Albert Qualls by San Diego in the eighth round, running back Roy Bell by Dallas in the ninth and defensive back John Shelley by Buffalo to start off the 17th."
