Tinker Owens
1976 · Round 4 · Pick 96 · WR · New Orleans Saints
Charles Wayne "Tinker" Owens was born on October 3, 1954, in Miami, Oklahoma, the younger brother of 1969 Heisman winner Steve Owens. At Miami High School (class of 1972) he lettered in football, basketball and track. He was an All-State and prep All-American wingback and safety, helped win the 1972 Class 3A state basketball title, and was all-state in three track events. He played receiver on Oklahoma's 1974 and 1975 national title teams. Grokipedia calls him a consensus All-American in both years. Wikipedia's list confirms first-team All-American and All-Big Eight in 1974. New Orleans drafted him in the fourth round in 1976; OU and Wikipedia list pick 96, and Grokipedia and Pro Football Reference's OU draft table list pick 95. Two sources each, so this bio keeps pick 96 and flags it as unconfirmed. He played four seasons for the Saints (1976 and 1978–1980). He is in the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on April 28, 1977 (NewsBank page 46): "The Alumni team got a shot in the arm Wednesday when Steve and Tinker Owens announced they will play in the 29th annual Oklahoma Varsity-Alumni football game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday."
