Eight states, one dream: the Sooner safety now patrolling for Pittsburgh

Robert Spears-Jennings was born in South Carolina and moved often as a kid. He attended Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, Texas, before transferring to Broken Arrow High School in Oklahoma. He played safety and wide receiver, and as a senior he was named the Oklahoma All-District 6A-I Safety of the Year after recording 56 tackles and four interceptions, while also catching 36 passes for 626 yards and eight touchdowns.

He committed to Oklahoma and played four seasons for the Sooners (2022–2025). He appeared in nine games as a true freshman, made 38 tackles as a sophomore in 2023 with two starts, and moved into the starting lineup as a junior in 2024.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Spears-Jennings in the seventh round (224th overall) of the 2026 NFL draft. He has made the most of his opportunity as a rookie, recording an interception and 15 tackles through the first four weeks of the season.

As of October 8, 2026, Spears-Jennings is an active safety for the Steelers, proving that seventh-round picks can make an impact right away.
