Joe Mixon Reaches Plea Deal, Avoids Jail Time

Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon issued an apology and entered an Alford plea to a misdemeanor charge for punching a woman at a Norman restaurant on July 25.

In an Alford plea, a defendant can maintain that he is innocent but allow a court to pronounce him guilty, acknowledging that sufficient evidence exists for a jury to find him guilty.

Mixon received a one-year deferred sentence, will be responsible for 100 hours of community service and will have to partake in cognitive behavior counseling. He entered an Alford plea on the charge of acts resulting in gross injury/outraging public decency.

Gerald McCoy Signs Mega Extension Worth Nearly $100M

Tampa Bay announced on Saturday that star defensive tackle and former Sooner Gerald McCoy signed a seven-year extension. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the pact is worth up to $98 million with a base of $95.2 million and $51.5 million in guarantees, according to a source who has seen the contract.

The deal keeps McCoy under contract in Tampa through 2021 and -- for now -- maintains him as the league's highest-paid defensive tackle.

It's a massive amount of money for a player set to anchor Tampa's defense for years to come. Rapoport was told that McCoy and the Bucs exchanged countless proposals, working tirelessly on the extension since before training camp. Both sides wanted this to happen. (NFL.com)

Prosecution's Request to Remove Judge From Adrian Peterson Case Denied

A Texas judge swept aside a possible block Wednesday to a Dec. 1 trial for former Sooner and Minnesota Vikings MVP Adrian Peterson’s felony child abuse case.

Retired Texas Judge Jeff Walker declined the prosecution’s request to take Judge Kelly Case off the case.

Montgomery County, Texas, prosecutors had claimed Case is biased against their office. District Attorney Brett Ligon noted that Case had recently referred to him as a “media whore.” Peterson’s defense attorneys wanted to keep Case on the bench, saying the prosecutor hadn’t met the high standard necessary to remove the judge.

Coach Sherri Coale and Players Talk Upcoming Season at Annual OU Media Day

The Oklahoma women’s basketball team officially began the 2014-2015 season with its first official practice on the floor of the Lloyd Noble Center Monday.

Head coach Sherri Coale and the Sooners gathered with members of the media in the Chesapeake Courtside Club above the practice facility of the Lloyd Noble Center for the Sooners’ annual media day before hitting the hardwood for their first full practice of the year.

“We have had a couple of training camps,” Coale said. “We have a defensive training camp and an offensive training camp where we go four days a week for each. That’s the look that we have had primarily. They have great energy; they seem to have a great deal of confidence and great chemistry together. We’re just young, unproven and we have to earn our way.”

The Sooners’ fifteen-person roster features five freshmen and six sophomores. Many of those youngsters are expected to play key roles for the Coale’s squad. One place that youth will be on display is at point guard, where freshman Gabbi Ortiz, sophomore T’ona Edwards and redshirt sophomore Maddie Manning are competing for the starting job.

Ford, Walker Expected to Return to Practice This Week

OU coach Bob Stoops anticipates running back Keith Ford returning to practice this week. Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said defensive lineman Charles Walker is expected to return from a sprained knee this week, too.

The Sooners have been without Ford for the last four games. He was their leading rusher in the first three games, averaging 5.7 yards per carry and scoring five touchdowns.

Walker hasn’t played since suffering a knee sprain against Tulsa on Sept. 6. (Norman Transcript)

OU Men's Basketball Ranked No. 19 in USA Today Coaches Poll

Preseason recognition for the University of Oklahoma men's basketball team continues to roll in. The Sooners are ranked No. 19 in the initial 2014-15 USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll.

OU's No. 19 position in the poll marks its first preseason ranking since the 2009-10 season when it was No. 16 in the coaches poll and No. 17 in the AP version.

The Sooners are one of four Big 12 teams that appear in the top 20. Fellow league members Kansas (No. 5), Texas (No. 10) and Iowa State (No. 14) are also ranked.

OU returns four starters and 68 percent of its scoring and 70 percent of its rebounding from last year's Big 12 runner-up squad, which finished 23-10 overall and earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners averaged 81.9 points a game in 2013-14, the nation's seventh highest figure and the program's highest in 20 years.

Murray entered Sunday's game against the New York Giants on pace for more than 2,000 yards and 424 carries, which would be a single-season record. (More at ESPN Dallas)

Bob Stoops Unhappy With Zack Sanchez's Show of Support for Suspended Teammate

In Saturday's game, cornerback Zack Sanchez wrote “Free Frank Shannon” on his headband and had “Free Baker” on his eye black. Of course, both statements are referring to players the Sooners don't have available to them this year. The school has suspended Shannon for the year, while Mayfield's absence is due to an NCAA ruling.

Bob Stoops said on the Big 12 teleconference he was unaware of that during the game, but addressed the issue during his press conference.

“They shouldn't be (making those statements); I don't like that,” Stoops said. “I stand by the university and what we've done and that will be addressed. Nothing team related is to be made public and that's the same on social media. I would regard that as social media. The team matters are to be with us, period.” (News9)

Soccer: Sooners Snag Another Weekly Honor

For the second week in a row and fourth week this season, OU soccer has at least one Big 12 award winner.

Chelsea Jackson became the fourth Sooner this season to capture weekly honors from the conference office on Tuesday. Jackson was named Newcomer of the Week after posting her second career goal against TCU last Sunday.

Oklahoma now leads the conference in Newcomer of the Week awards (three) and overall weekly honors (six) this season. No other Big 12 team owns more than four awards this season.

Jackson notched her second goal of the season last weekend, meeting a cross in front of the box and heading it past the goalie to give OU the lead in the 28th minute against TCU. The freshman forward came off the bench versus the Horned Frogs to see 69 minutes of action, anchoring an offense that sent 14 shots at its opponent. Jackson is OU's third true freshman to net multiple goals for the Sooners in 2014.

Zack Sanchez Earns Big 12 POW Honors

The Big 12 Conference announced Monday that sophomore cornerback Zack Sanchez has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Sanchez tied a career high with eight tackles and returned an interception for a 43-yard touchdown in a 31-26 victory vs. Texas. He leads the Big 12 with five interceptions on the season.

Sanchez was named a Freshman All-America selection in 2013 and registered his first career interception in a 41-31 victory at Kansas State. He returned that ball for a 74-yard touchdown. Dating back to that contest, he owns seven interceptions over the last nine games, the best mark of any FBS player over that span. The Ft. Worth, Texas, native has 25 tackles (18 solo) and three pass breakups to go with a blocked PAT return that resulted in two points.

WBB: Peyton Little Tabbed As Preseason Newcomer of the Year

Oklahoma’s Peyton Little was tabbed the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Preseason Newcomer of the Year, announced by the conference office Wednesday. The award was chosen by the leagues head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

Little, a transfer from Texas A&M, hits the courts in a Sooner uniform for the first time this season after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.

The redshirt sophomore played in all 35 games as a freshman with Texas A&M in 2012-13 where she averaged 4.5 points, 1.2 rebounds and 15.0 minutes per game. The 5-11 guard made 53-of-155 field goals (.342) and 25-of-98 3-pointers (.255). Little also totaled 32 assists and made 15 steals.

The Abilene, Texas native is one of two returning OU redshirts in 2014-15, joining redshirt sophomore Maddie Manning. Little and Madding add to the depth of seven returning letterwinners. The Sooners also welcome six newcomers.

Along with Little, both Bria Holmes (West Virginia) and Ariel Atkins (Texas) picked up Big 12 Conference awards. Holmes was named the Preseason Player of the Year and Atkins picked up Preseason Freshman of the Year.

The Big 12 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll will be announced on Oct. 8.

Oklahoma tips off its season Wednesday, Nov. 5, with an exhibition game against Southeastern Oklahoma State at the Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by Sooner Sports TV.
