Jeff Fisher: Sam Bradford Ahead of Schedule on His Rehabilitation

St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Friday that former Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is ahead of schedule on his rehabilitation, according to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner.

Bradford sat out this season after tearing his ACL in a preseason game in August. He was limited to only seven games in 2013 with the same injury.

Fisher was also asked about a report that Bradford recently was granted permission to seek a trade. "I was surprised to hear that -- not surprised -- but no, that's inaccurate," Fisher said. "We talked about what our plans are for him." (SI.com)

Judge Dismisses Suit to Release Joe Mixon Surveillance Video

A Cleveland County judge dismissed a lawsuit regarding a video that shows a physical dispute between Joe Mixon and Amelia Molitor.

The judge cites that the video does not "depict an arrest or show the cause of an arrest," because Mixon was never arrested by an officer. In August, Mixon appeared at the Cleveland County jail on his own and was then released.

The lawsuit was filed by Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters against the City of Norman and the Norman Police Department. OAB claims the city of Norman violates the Open Records Act by not releasing the video the public.

The Oklahoma men’s tennis team claimed its first ever national indoor championship with a 4-2 victory over No. 1 USC in the finals of the 2015 ITA Men’s Team National Indoor Championship Monday afternoon in Chicago.

In a rematch of last year’s NCAA championship with the Trojans, the Sooners snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat in doubles, successfully defending six match points, to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

OU picked up singles wins from senior Dane Webb at No. 3 and junior Axel Alvarez at No. 2 to push the Sooners’ lead to 3-2. For the second day in a row, sophomore Alex Ghilea delivered the clinching point for OU, winning at No. 5 to give Oklahoma its first ever national indoor championship.

“These things are years and years in the making as far as effort goes," sixth year head coach John Roddick said. "It seems like a long time to get here. When you do, you have to enjoy it, and I think our guys are excited. For our program, it’s massive. I haven’t checked my phone, but it’s blowing up. Just to say that we’re national champions, just to put those two words together is a huge thing for any program, especially ours coming from where we did. To know that we belong, and that we can win this kind of tournament."

Doubles started slowly for the Sooners. At the No. 2 spot sophomore Andrew Harris and freshman Spencer Papa fell to the 38th-ranked duo of Max De Vroome and Eric Johnson 6-1. The Sooners were also down breaks at No. 1 and No. 3 and momentum was firmly with the Trojans.

Green-Beckham transferred to OU last July in the aftermath of his dismissal from the Missouri football team, the result of several behavioral incidents. He allegedly forced his way into an apartment while looking for his girlfriend and shoved an 18-year old woman down some stairs, and escaped first-degree burglary charges only after the woman declined to press charges for fear of backlash. He was also arrested in connection to two drug-related incidents while playing for Missouri.

Softball: Parker, Chamberlain Earn Big 12 Honors

In helping No. 4/3 Oklahoma to a 5-0 start and tournament championship at the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic, freshman Paige Parker has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and senior Lauren Chamberlain has been selected as the co-Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Making her collegiate debut, Parker dominated in the circle as she went 2-0 with a save and did not allow a run in 11.2 innings of work. She struck out 20 batters and walked just one while giving up only two hits. Opponents combined to post a .054 batting average against her.

The highlight of Parker’s weekend came in her second collegiate start as she threw the ninth perfect game in Oklahoma history. Parker struck out a career-high nine batters, seven of which were swinging, and did not allow a single Rainbow Wahine player to reach base in an 8-0, five-inning win over Hawaii in the title game. She needed only 69 pitches to record the first perfect game by a Sooner since Keilani Ricketts did it against Kansas on March 30, 2012.

In her first collegiate start, Parker struck out eight batters in five innings as OU beat Saint Mary’s, 17-0, in five innings. She faced just two batters over the minimum and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. Parker picked up the first save of her career in an 11-3, six-inning win over No. 25/RV DePaul. Parker threw the final 1.2 innings and struck out three with one hit and no runs allowed. With OU leading 7-3 in the fifth, DePaul threatened to do more damage as it loaded the bases with just one out. Parker stopped the threat though as she came on in relief and got a foul out and strikeout.

Oklahoma Co-Defensive Coordinator Jerry Montgomery Leaving for NFL

UPDATED STORY BELOW
University of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops confirmed Tuesday that Jerry Montgomery has agreed in principle to accept an NFL coaching position pending the execution of a signed contract.

“This is a rare opportunity for Jerry and his family to join one of the finest organizations in the National Football League,” Stoops said. “I appreciate the positive impact that Jerry has made with our defensive line the past two seasons, as well as his many other contributions to Oklahoma Football. The NFL is getting a fine man and a very talented football coach. I support Jerry’s decision to further his career goals working with one of the most stable and successful franchises in pro football.

“The University of Oklahoma continues to be an attractive destination for some of the nation’s elite coaches and players,” Stoops continued. “I have already begun the search process to bring another talented defensive line coach into our program. On behalf of our entire staff, we wish Jerry, Natalie and their family the very best.”

Rams Look to Restructure Sam Bradford's Contract

Former Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is set to make $12.985 million in the final year of his rookie contract, a number that is much too high for the injury-plagued quarterback.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch's Jim Thomas, the St. Louis Rams will seek to restructure the deal of the former No. 1 overall pick.

Bradford tore his ACL for the second time last year, missing all of the 2014 season. He's missed 25 of the past 32 games and 31 total over his five-year career.

How the Rams attempt to slice Bradford's contract will be interesting to follow. Thomas suggests the possibility of lopping off a portion and converting it into a series of incentives to allow the quarterback a chance to recoup some of the money. (NFL.com)

Former Sooner Jermaine Gresham Likely to Part Ways with Bengals

Former Oklahoma and current Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham has played out the five-year contract that he signed as Cincinnati’s first-round draft pick in 2010. He’s unlikely to get another contract with the team.

Gresham started 15 games last season and is a good blocker, but he had a career-low average of 7.4 yards a catch in 2014, and he has fumbled six times over the last two years while catching 108 passes. Fumbling on more than 5 percent of all receptions is way, way too much. (Pro Football Talk)

NFL Scout: Blake Bell Is Too Far Behind to Make It at Tight End

An unnamed NFC North scout recently told NFL.com's Lance Zierlein he believes Blake Bell's chances of making an NFL roster at tight end are slim.

"Personally, I don't really think much of his chances to make it as a tight end because he's too far behind where he needs to be. I did think he looked better by the end of the year, so maybe I'm wrong," said the unnamed scout.

Zierlein, NFL.com draft analyst, wasn't as pessimistic in his analysis of Bell's future in the NFL.

"[Bell] flashed sure hands as a pass catcher last season, but his lack of experience at tight end is evident, and he's extremely raw in his route-running," wrote Zierlein.

"A big positive in Bell's favor is that he showed great improvement in just one season, particularly as a blocker, and he could have a future at the position in the pros if a team is willing to be patient with him."

Bell, 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, moved to tight end after 2013 season after losing starting quarterback job to Trevor Knight.

OU Football Announces Hiring of Cooks, Simmons

University of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops officially added Kerry Cooks and Dennis Simmons to his coaching staff Monday, while announcing new responsibilities for other assistant coaches.

Cooks will serve as defensive backs coach, working with cornerbacks and safeties. He joins the Sooners after spending the past five seasons at Notre Dame. Simmons will coach outside receivers for Oklahoma in 2015 after spending the past three years in that role for head coach Mike Leach at Washington State.

Stoops also indicated several changes in responsibility on his coaching staff. Mike Stoops continues to serve as associate head coach and Oklahoma’s defensive play caller in his role as co-defensive coordinator. In addition to those duties, he will coach the outside linebackers in 2015. Jerry Montgomery will add duties as co-defensive coordinator to his assignment as defensive line coach, while Tim Kish will coach the inside linebackers.

On offense, Lincoln Riley will serve as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Cale Gundy adds responsibilities as assistant head coach and moves to inside receivers coach this season, in addition to retaining his capacity as director of recruiting. Jay Boulware will coach running backs and fullbacks, while continuing to serve as special teams coordinator. Bill Bedenbaugh returns for this third season as Oklahoma’s offensive line coach.

“I feel organizing our coaches in this manner will best utilize the talents of both the new and returning members of our staff,” the head coach indicated. “Each assistant coach has clearly defined roles, responsibilities and expectations. We are all excited to get back on the practice field with our team for the start of spring football on March 7.”

More on Irving, Texas, native and former NFL defensive back, Kerry Cooks
A four-year letter-winner and two-year starter as a strong safety at Iowa from 1993-97, Cooks captained the Hawkeyes as a senior and earned All-Big Ten honors. He was selected in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL Draft by Minnesota. He also spent time on the rosters of Green Bay, Atlanta and Jacksonville before retiring in 2001.

“Kerry adds another talented coach and recruiter to our staff,” said Stoops. “We are excited to welcome Kerry and his family to the University of Oklahoma.”

The Fighting Irish made five straight bowl appearances during Cooks’ stint with Notre Dame (2010-14), including a berth in the BCS National Championship Game following the 2012 season. That year, Notre Dame ranked second in the nation in yards per completion (9.95) and were tied for sixth among FBS squads by allowing just 11 touchdown passes as the team permitted 199.8 passing yards per game, a figure that ranked 25th in the country.

Notre Dame consistently boasted one of the nation’s best pass defenses under Cooks’ tutelage. In 2014, the Irish tied for 15th among FBS teams, forcing 16 interceptions. In 2013, Notre Dame ranked 15th in the FBS in pass defense (198.2 ypg), improving from 25ththe previous season (200.2 ypg).

Five defensive backs mentored by Cooks at Notre Dame were selected in the NFL Draft: Harrison Smith (1st round in 2012 – Minnesota), Robert Blanton (5th round in 2012 – Minnesota), Jamoris Slaughter (6th round in 2013 – Cleveland), Zeke Motta (7th round in 2013 – Atlanta) and Bennett Jackson (6th round – N.Y. Giants in 2014).

Cooks enjoyed previous coaching stops at Wisconsin (2006-09), Minnesota (2005), Western Illinois (2004) and Kansas State (2003).

Cooks graduated from Iowa in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He and his wife, Elvern, are the parents of two daughters, Kerrington and Kenadee.

Dennis Simmons previously worked with Lincoln Riley at Texas Tech, East Carolina

“Dennis is a great fit for our coaching staff,” said Stoops of Simmons. “He’s worked closely with Mike Leach and Lincoln Riley, and possesses the talent to teach our receivers the concepts and techniques necessary to excel in this offense. His track record of developing playmakers like Michael Crabtree and many other talented receivers will be another asset to our program.

RELATED: Report: Dennis Simmons Named Oklahoma Wide Receivers Coach

“In addition, Dennis has built a strong network of relationships across the country that will also benefit us as we continue to attract the nation’s top players to the University of Oklahoma.”

In 2014, Washington State led all FBS schools in passing, averaging 477.7 yards per game, over 100 ypg more than the next-closest squad as the Cougars shattered the Pac-12 record with 5,732 passing yards. Washington State also ranked seventh in the nation in total offense and were ninth in completion percentage last season. Simmons’ top pupil in 2014 was Vince Mayle, a former basketball player who tied for fourth in the nation with 106 receptions, while his 1,483 receiving yards ranked fifth among FBS players.

During the 2013 campaign, Washington State set another Pac-12 record with 470 completions as the Cougars ranked fourth in the nation by averaging 368.0 ypg after coming in 10th in the nation in that department in 2012 (330.4 ypg).

Simmons most recently worked with Riley at East Carolina from 2010-11 as the Pirates’ outside receivers coach. He helped propel Lance Lewis to a record-setting 2010 campaign. Lewis became only the third player in school history to register a 1,000-yard receiving season as the All-Conference USA performer caught 89 passes for 1,116 yards with 14 scores.

His initial assignment working with Leach and Riley came at Texas Tech, where he coached wide receivers from 2008-09 and helped Michael Crabtree earn the Biletnikoff Award and consensus All-America honors as a redshirt sophomore in 2008. Crabtree was subsequently tabbed as the 10th overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft after accumulating 97 receptions for 1,165 yards and 19 touchdowns during his final campaign for the Red Raiders.

In 2009, Simmons and Riley helped develop walk-on receiver Alex Torres into a Freshman All-America selection who led the Red Raiders in receiving. Simmons served as Leach’s chief of staff from 2005-07 after originally joining Texas Tech as the assistant athletics director/quality control for the football program. He previously coached running backs at Cornell University in 1999, where also held the title of assistant athletics director and chief of staff.

A three-year starting outside linebacker at BYU, Simmons began his coaching career at his alma mater in 1997, working with the offensive line and special teams. He earned a degree in broadcast communications was a member of teams that claimed four straight Western Athletic Conference titles and made four bowl appearances.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Simmons earned his master's degree in educational leadership in August 1999 from BYU. He served as an NFL Minority Fellowship intern with the Buffalo Bills during the summer of 1999.

Simmons and his wife, LaTosha, were married in 2012. He has one daughter, Kendyll and they have one son, Kannon.

The hiring of Cooks and Simmons is pending the approval of the University’s Board of Regents.

OU's Jerry Montgomery Named Scout.com's Big 12 Recruiter of the Year

OU co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery was named Scout.com's Big 12 Recruiter of the Year on Thursday.

"The newly promoted Co-Defensive Coordinator at Oklahoma was all over the country helping to reel in some of the Sooners’ best signings for a class that finished No. 14 overall and No. 2 in the Big 12," Scout recruiting analyst Greg Powers said in a news release.

Montgomery just finished his second season as OU's defensive line coach after spending the previous two seasons at Michigan in the same position.

Softball: Sooners Open Season With Win Over No. 25 DePaul

A five-run fifth inning helped No. 4/3 Oklahoma rally for a 9-2 win over No. 25/RV DePaul in the 2015 season opener at the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, Thursday.

The Sooners trailed 2-1 entering the fifth and had managed just one hit off of DePaul starter Maxine Rodriguez. The Blue Demons went to the bullpen and brought in Mary Connolly for relief, but it ended up playing to OU’s advantage.

With one out, seniors Lauren Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley drew back-to-back walks before fellow senior Georgia Casey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With freshman Paige Parker batting, Connolly was called for an illegal pitch to bring home Chamberlain with the tying run.

Parker then picked up her first collegiate hit with a single back up the middle to drive home Pendley and put OU on top, 3-2. Junior transfer Tori Nirschl then made her Sooners debut when she ran pinch ran for Parker and promptly stole second base.

MLB Veterans Join OU Baseball Broadcast Crew

Sooner Sports TV has tabbed former Major League Baseball players George Frazier and Mickey Tettleton as color commentators on television broadcasts for the Oklahoma baseball team during the 2015 season. The duo will split duties, while veteran OU broadcaster Chad McKee returns for another season as the play-by-play announcer.

Frazier, a 10-year pitcher in the majors, played for the Sooners from 1975-76 and returned to Norman to call a handful of games in 2014. He has been the television color commentator of the Colorado Rockies on ROOT Sports since 1998. Frazier broadcasting career began immediately following his playing days in 1988 as a college basketball broadcaster and University of Tulsa football sideline reporter. He returned to baseball to broadcast regional games for the Minnesota Twins as well as working with ESPN and Baseball Network.

A ninth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978, Frazier was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1978; where he made his MLB debut at the age of 23. In 10 seasons, he appeared in 415 games, all in relief, for five different franchises. He won 35 games, saved 29 and owned a 4.20 earned run average. Frazier pitched in his first postseason in 1981 with the New York Yankees; reaching the World Series. In the final outing of his career, Frazier turned in two innings of shutout-relief in game four of the 1987 World Series as the Twins would go on to win the series in seven games over the Cardinals.

Running Back Joe Mixon Reinstated to Team

Freshman running back Joe Mixon, who was suspended from the Oklahoma football program for the 2014 season after he was charged with a misdemeanor for punching a female student, has rejoined the team, Sooners running backs coach Cale Gundy told reporters Wednesday.

"He made a split-second and wrong decision, and he knows that," Gundy said during Oklahoma's signing day news conference. "He is a super, super kid. And I use the term 'kid' because he still is like a kid. He's still very young."

Mixon, who was the gem of Oklahoma's 2014 signing class, entered an Alford plea in his misdemeanor assault case Oct. 30, and agreed to perform 100 hours of community service and undergo counseling. Report: Dennis Simmons Named Oklahoma Wide Receivers Coach

Dennis Simmons, who has proven to be one of the nation's top recruiters and receivers coaches in his time at Washington State, will be the new receivers coach at Oklahoma, he told FOX Sports.

I also get a chance to reunite with coaches that I've worked with before and know very well."

Simmons, who spent 10 years at Texas Tech with Mike Leach and the past three seasons with him at Washington State, will get back to working with new Sooners OC Lincoln Riley on Stoops staff. (More at FOXSports.com)
