Softball: Oklahoma to Face Alabama in Primetime Showdown

Third-seeded Oklahoma (52-7) opens play at the 2016 Women’s College World Series Thursday night at 6 p.m. against No. 6 Alabama (51-12) on ESPN2.

Making their fifth WCWS appearance in the last six years and 10th trip overall, the Sooners face off against the Crimson Tide in another matchup between the teams in postseason play. The two met in the 2015 Super Regional in Tuscaloosa, opened the 2014 WCWS against one another and faced each other in the 2012 WCWS Finals.

Report: Baker Mayfield May Get Extra Year of Eligibility

Oklahoma is hoping a proposed Big 12 rule change could restore the year of eligibility that quarterback Baker Mayfield lost when he transferred from Texas Tech.

According to a Big 12 official, the proposed rule change would prevent walk-ons who transfer within the conference from losing a season of eligibility. If approved next week during the Big 12's annual spring meetings, it would allow Mayfield to return to Oklahoma for the 2017 season. (ESPN.com)

From Dallas Morning News: Baker Mayfield and his father, James, have been critical of the Big 12's decision. Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said at the Final Four in April that the school would try to help Mayfield get the year back. But Castiglione says it's not just about Mayfield, calling it a student-athlete request with broader implications.

He notes that the rule modification would apply to all non-recruited walk-ons now and in the future, not just Mayfield.

Asked if he believes the amendment can pass, Castiglione said he wasn't sure.

"That's really tough to say," Castiglione said. "I definitely think it should." (Dallas Morning News)

WR Dede Westbrook Arrested on Complaint of Criminal Trespass

Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook was arrested in his hometown of Cameron, Texas, on Monday on a complaint of criminal trespass.

An official at the Milam County jail said Westbrook was booked at 11:30 a.m. Monday and was released from the jail at 2:15 p.m. the same day.

OU's Season Opener Against Houston to Kickoff at 11 A.M.

Oklahoma football fans won't have to wait long on college football's opening Saturday for their team to hit the field.

Kickoff for the Sooners' Sept. 3 season opener against the Houston Cougars in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium in Houston is set for 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised by ABC.

Boren: Big 12 in 'Fact-Finding' Stage; Will Need 12 to 14 Schools For Network

Oklahoma President David Boren said he and fellow Big 12 presidents are in a "fact-finding" stage rather than a "decision-making" stage after Thursday's Board of Regents meeting.

"We're inching along, but I don't know exactly how soon we can come to these conclusions," Boren said in response to questions about creating a conference network and conference expansion.

MBB: Sooners Add Jordan Shepherd to 2016 Class

University of Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger announced Monday the signing of 2016 guard Jordan Shepherd to a national letter of intent. Shepherd, currently a senior at Asheville Christian Academy in Asheville, N.C., will be eligible for the Sooners this fall.

Shepherd, 6-2 and 175 pounds, was honored as the 2015 Carolinas Athletic Association’s player of the year after averaging 19.2 points, 5.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game as a senior. He was also named to the NCISAA 2-A all-state team.

Sam Bradford Rescinds Trade Demand, Returns to Eagles

Former Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford has surrendered in his battle with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bradford’s agent, Tom Condon, told Sal Paolantonio of ESPN that Bradford has rescinded trade demand, will show up to offseason workouts, and is committed to fulfilling his contract with the Eagles. (ProFootballTalk)

Softball: Sooners Clinch Big 12 Title

No. 7/7 Oklahoma (45-7, 15-1 Big 12) won the 2016 Big 12 championship outright Sunday after a 10-1 win in five innings over Texas Tech (23-32, 6-12) at Marita Hynes Field.

Oklahoma clinched a share of the conference title Saturday, but won it outright with Sunday’s victory. Second-place Baylor is 13-4 in the standings with one game remaining, while OU is now 15-1 with two games to go.

It’s the fifth straight league crown for OU; no other Big 12 program has won more than two in a row. Overall, Oklahoma has now won nine regular season titles and four tournament crowns. Second place belongs to Texas with eight combined league titles.

Sterling Shepard to Wear Father's No. 87 in NFL

Former Oklahoma wide receiver Sterling Shepard will carry the No. 87 as a New York Giant.

Shepard father, Derrick Shepard, wore the No. 87 when playing for the Cowboys, Redskins and Saints.

In Sterling's four years at Oklahoma, he wore the No. 3 before being drafted at the 41st overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Houston Mayor Predicts UH Will 'Easily' Beat Oklahoma in Season Opener

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, a University of Houston graduate, didn’t hold back when asked about the Cougars' chances against Oklahoma when they’ll kick off the 2016 season at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

"We’ll win that one easily then move on,” Turner said in the spring 2016 issue of the University of Houston Magazine. “In this first game, I think we’ll win by 14 or possibly 21 points. Then, we’ll look for some stiffer competition.” (Oklahoma Daily)

Kick Returner Alex Ross to Transfer From Oklahoma

Oklahoma announced Friday that running back and kick returner Alex Ross will transfer from the school.

"Alex has been a great teammate and team guy for four years for us, and we've always been proud of him," said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops in a release. "This is an opportunity for him to go somewhere else and play full time. We wish him the best."

Lon Kruger Announces Hiring Carlin Hartman to Basketball Staff

University of Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger announced Wednesday the hiring of Carlin Hartman as assistant coach.

Hartman joins the Sooners after spending the past two seasons as the associate head coach at Rice University.

“We are very pleased to welcome Carlin, his wife Christine and family to Oklahoma,” Kruger said. “Carlin’s experience and success everywhere he has been is well-documented. He will do a terrific job and we are excited for him to get started in Norman.”

OU Basketball Player Suspended After Felony Assault Charge

A University of Oklahoma men's basketball player has been charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and battery on Wednesday.

According to court documents, a formal charge has been filed against 22-year-old Akolda Manyang.

At about 3:40 a.m. on May 1, Norman police responded to the report of an assault on Campus Corner. The victim, later identified as former OU football player Tyler Evans, told police he had injuries to his face, including swelling, a lacerated lip, and two missing teeth, which he said were knocked out from a punch.

Former Sooner Adrian Peterson Donating $100k to Texas Flood Victims

Former Oklahoma and current Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is donating more than $100,000 to relief efforts in his hometown of Palestine, Texas, after flash flooding destroyed dozens of houses and killed six people there over the weekend.

Peterson is partnering with the Salvation Army and will travel to Palestine on Thursday to survey the damage. He said he will make an initial donation of $100,000 and then match donations from there.
